6400 Black Edition.
It will work with the Phenom.
Just without all the features of a am2+ board.

what would I need for a quad core amd machine as far as mobo and cpu
post #6 of 11
Any "AM2+" will be ok for AMD phenoms. The m2n-sli will support the quad phenoms with a bios update tho.

I apologize if this is a bit off topic but what, if any motherboard out there (brand doesn't really matter, although all of my past builds have used either an Asus or DFI board), is the best (I am using this term pretty loosely...so feel free to interpret as you wish) board to go with the AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition, which also supports SLI?

Actually, what's the deal with SLI right now? I've been out of the computer hardware game for awhile now (damn school!!!) so I'm kind of ignorant to all of the new tri- and quad-video card setups. I'm getting back into the game though so I plan to do my fair share of research. I guess since I am about to build my new computer in the next week I was just wondering whether or not it would even make sense to worry about purchasing a motherboard that supports SLI....you know, for future upgrading....

hmm if i was getting a phenom i would probably get the Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe. But to be honest i dont know alot about AM2+ boards. Also if ur getting a AMD system i would go with the whole AMD/ATI thing and get crossfire. The new ATI 4 series is coming out very soon so if your building a new PC wait for those

I ran the Phenom 9850 on the M2N-SLI Deluxe. It works but it is not optimized for QC support. I also have a 6400+ BE that ran circles around the Phenom on the M2N-SLI Deluxe mobo... It works but it is a waste of money if you do not plan on upgrading the mobo the 6400+ is the key. I did find a cheap $89 ABIT AMD 770 that runs a Phenom to full capability. So if you want to run a Phenom cheap look for the MOBO I cited here. Thanks.
