2x2gb ballistix - Page 2

First of all, dont expect your Intel board to run the same timings and speeds as an NVIDIA chipset does. The NVIDIA boards can OC ram a lot higher. For example, I could run my Ballistix Lanfest at 2.2v and reach 1200 in my 680i, but only at 1030 in my x38.

Secondly, try a tRFC above 50, that helps with 2x2Gb kits. I know G.Skill will only run at DDR2 800 if tRFC is set to 52.

Okay...there's some majorly impossible expectations in here.

There is no way you are going to get DDR2-914 4-3-3-8 with a 2x2 GB kit.
Not a chance.

Though i've still yet to see it confirmed, it's believed that the kit you have uses Powerchips (or if not, it's Micron that clocks very similarly).

Anyway, there are a few issues with what you want to accomplish.

First off, it's not likely you'll get much farther than DDR2-800 4-4-4 anyway...usually you don't get much more than DDR2-850ish before you have to switch to CAS 5, if that even.

And the big issue you have is that you're on a P5B Deluxe, which is missing some important options in the way of subtimings.
(I would know, i got my DFI to replace my P5B-D...)

For 2x2 GB kits to clock at all, you need tRFC set loose, which means you cannot use 42...that's just not loose enough.

Set timings to be managed by SPD, instead of manually setting them.

If you let SPD set them, it should set tRFC @ 51, which is enough to OC 2x2 GB kits not badly.

If you use SPD for timings, it'll likely be 5-5-5 something...but it'll also allow you to reach DDR2-1000+ speeds.

If you have any other concerns, just ask...i've had my P5B Deluxe for a long time (it runs my HTPC now).

You must have never used an nvidia chipset to overclock RAM

Problem is, i haven't seen a single other person on the internetz with results anywhere close to yours, so till then i'll say you got very lucky.

And the OP has a P5B-D, which means he will not be achieving similar results.
That mobo simply doesn't have the subtimings control to do it.

Only way he's going to get anywhere with that mobo is by setting timings to SPD, as i discovered myself long ago.

Good to hear you're at least getting into Windows now

You might have to up NB voltage somewhat (depending on what you presently have it at), but you should be able to do well over DDR2-1000 speeds with SPD timings.

What CPU speed & what RAM ratio?

I found my P5B-D was really weak with the 4:5 ratio, which sucked since that was usually the ideal one...2:3 should work well.

Thats true, but let me ask this:

If he leaves all other settings on auto but forces the DDR2 800 speed and the CAS4... would that automatically change everything back to manual?
