BIOS won't recognize my harddrive :/

Thread Starter
Ok sorry if these are dumb questions, first time builder here! Using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard and *trying* to get it to recognize an 80GB Samsung IDE HDD.

This drive was scrapped from an old computer of the family's, but I have run it in a different machine just recently with no problems. The Gigabyte mobo, however, refuses to recognize this drive. It doesn't show up in BIOS, either Windows XP or Vista install discs, and if I try to load past POST I get a disk read error.

Could anyone explain to me the steps I'm supposed to take at this point? Is the problem possibly that I don't have the necessary chipset for my motherboard to recognize this drive? Unfortunately I bought the board "open box" from Newegg and it came with nothing but bubble-wrap. Downloading drivers from the Gigabyte website now, but I would think I need an OS up and running before I could use those anyway.

Thanks a ton guys for reading and responding,

*edit* Meant to also mention that I tried a separate SATA drive in there as well with the exact same result, so that's another reason I don't think the drive is the problem.

Its a little unclear to me whats goin on. first off when you tried the sata drive was the ide disconnected or still connected. second is ide enabled in the bios. Also is the jumper on the hard drive set correctly. I am also curious is the ide meant to be the main drive on the pc ? In the older days yeah you might have to do something special for the bios to recognize the drive or all of the drive , but given the situation i dont really see any compatability issues. let us know whats goin on

When I tried the SATA drive the IDE was disconnected. As far as enabling the IDE in the BIOS, I don't know...I don't see any option like that. When you go into the Advanced BIOS Features tab or whatever though, it is not recognizing either drive.

IDE Master/Slave 0-4 all say [None] I believe (sorry I'm at work right now so can't get directly to this info). Well that isn't exactly true, it does pull up my LiteOn DVD drive and show that it recognizes that. I can boot from a CD or DVD, and I even tried going through both the Windows XP and Windows Vista installs. Neither one recognizes any harddrive on the computer. If I try to boot straight to the harddrive, I get a Disk Read Error, similar to what might happen with a corrupted bootloader or maybe overlapping partitions.

Is the jumper on the hard drive set correctly? Do you mean is it plugged in properly? Yes it is. And yes, the IDE drive I was hoping to use as the main drive for this computer.

Basically it seems that the system is unable to recognize either of these harddrives, as evidenced by them not showing up in BIOS and me not being able to boot off of them.

I'm not sure if the problem could be that they are not clean and formatted? I still should think they would be shown in BIOS as being at least connected though.

Thanks for the response smokin...

Im gonna also assume now that the cd rom which is recognized is and ide interface also. That being said have you tried just the hd without the cd rom. Also theres no sense going any further than post if you dont see the drive right away so i wouldnt waste time waiting for the cd rom to load the windows disk.

I had a problem like this before, bios wouldn't recognize my h/d. I ended up using the default settings(save and exit). My bios then recognized the h/d, and I went back and changed everything back. I don't know if that will help, it worked for me.

No I haven't tried without a CD/DVD drive yet, I will give that a go also. Actually though, I have tried both IDE and SATA DVD drives, just trying to use process of elimination to figure out what is going wrong. Both of those worked fine, but neither hard drive worked with either DVD drive.

Yes I have tried using CMOS defaults, but surprisingly enough I have not yet bothered to try clearing it and resetting the jumper. Somehow I doubt it will fix this problem though...

Does anyone think if I moved the harddrive back to a different machine and reformatted it that would make a difference? I mean, I would think even if it was corrupted it would at least show up in BIOS...but then again what do I know...

basically what i was looking for. there is a good chance your cd rom is set to master and maybe the hard drive jumper is configured wrong. if the hd needs no jumper be sure to set the cd rom to slave then also be sure to plug it into the plug on the end of the ide cable and not in the middle , plug the harddrive in the middle. when your done you want the hard drive set to master the cd set to slave via jumpers and then also plug them in as i explained , then you might be ok
