quadruple post? Just edit, man.

Look for the zalman clip on mic, and the HD555s are a good choice, they were my first good headphone.

I agree with Namrac. Get some HD555s and a Zalman clip-on Mic. For teh sound card, either the ASUS or the Prelude. They are on a while different level from the Razer sound card.

Ok then.

Looks like its the Xonar that's going to be sitting in between my two GTX's then.

Or wait. I just read that it uses the CPU to force EAX5 encoding... I don't like the sound of that.

Now I am thinking more along the lines of the prelude as it has native EAX5 support.

Sure about a set of HD555's over a 5.1 headset? It will be primarily for gaming.

Yes, a good, high-end pair of headphones will trounce all but the very best of Surround Sound headphones in terms of sound quality, and will only be a smidgen behind in terms of positional audio. With the right tweaks in the sound card software, I was able to get pretty much surround sound out of my A900s in Crysis.

You are on Vista, EAX is forced to software acceleration anyway. The Prelude won't have an edge over the Xonar in Vista.

Get the X-fi but BEWARE.
Once you buy a good sound card, you will want better speakers, headphones e.t.c. It's like opening up a hole to throw money into!

I don't want to argue with you because I look at your sig and think you certainly know your stuff.

But are you sure? Suirely it would help to have the Native EAX5 support for the future anyway.

I don't use speakers. Will be buying a good headset / headphones. I want to line out with optical probably into my Sony stereo system.

I do need a card with the S/PDIF connections so I don't know anything cheaper or as good as the Xonar / Prelude.

Vista handles sound differently than XP did. Makes EAX basically useless.

And yes, 5.1 headsets are gimmicky trash, for the most part. Just think about it this way, you're paying $100 for two drivers instead of $100 for a bunch of drivers. Which ones are going to have better quality?
