Originally get 1 HD4870, then add another as I get the funds?

Well guys the idea is simpl eand I think it should work. I will buy 1 HD4870 when I build my comp this summer, then as games get more advanced I could add 1 more for Crossfire. I figure if I update other components when i get the new GPU this rig could stay up for a few years

Seems feasible. As graphics card strain increases, you can ease it with the addition of another. Though I believe you will not see the cost benefit when you reach the fourth card, or possibly even the 3rd as the tech progresses so quickly by the time you get to that card even crossfireX will not give adequate performance.

It may be a better idea, if you were to go the multi GPU route, start with a dual 4850 (speculated at $70 more than a single 4870) and then start adding cards to that pair.

Why not just save for a 4870X2, and then add another when necessary. Also, if the system in your sig is your planned build for the summer ... may I suggest, do not get an AMD CPU. I am not a fanboy. No matter how you slice it, that will severely limit your performance in games, unless AMD pulls a magic rabbit out of the hat. And with nehalem right around the corner, AMD is poised to be all but annihilated.

Well Right now AMD has cheaper Quads, the 9850BE is about the same price as a Q6700, this is Intel's older architecture and I would like to have more than 2 PCIE2.0 slots, whereas If i got an intel mobo the cheapest would be an X38 board which starts at $200 and gos up so Im sticking with AMD

Though AMD doesn't have the processors crown at the moment, the pricing and quality of their chipsets and the subsequent boards built around them are quite nice.

Anyone know the ETA of th SB750?

might wanna stick with 2 videocards the most. scaling on the 3rd and 4th blows and not worth it yet. I'm thinking CrossfireX will scale better on the next generation of cards, but 4870 can scale up nicely 2+ GPUS in the summer with its aritechture tweaks and better drivers as it goes along. You'd never know.

and i'm guessing the new amd south bridge to come at the end of this year, probably right before the 45nm phenoms.

You wont see much of an improvement from adding a 2nd/3rd card unless your playing at high resolutions.
Oh, hai.
