[VRZone] GTX280 Preview - Page 3

Okay, in two out of the three games tested a stock GTX 280 beats an overclocked 9800GX2, how is that not good?

Edit: the OC 9800GX2 they used was the XFX Black Edition clocked at 700/1700/2100 which would be about as fast as 2 9800GTX in SLI.

Wow that is disappointing especially the 3rd graph where a 9800 GX2 (and OC) beats it bad. I might just stick with a XFX 9800 GX2 black edition or wait it out for 4870 X2 and mature drivers.

Even if its twice as fast by your logic, which I'm guessing is because the gx2 is basically 2 9800's put together; It doesn't matter. Even if this is now one die, if it costs more than a gx2 or ATI's similar offering and has negligible performance difference it's not worth it just because its single die.

To all the guys who say that rubbish?

What are you thinking?

Its beating the 9800GX2 OC versions in most of the games, thats a dual core card for god sake!

So the new single core card is more powerful than Sli the best of the 8 and 9 series single cores, so whats with the thumbs down.....think before posting that its rubbish!

2900XT's long lost brother?
From what i'm getting at, the GTX 280, 240watts TDP monster comsumes more energy than the 9800GX2 with a tdp of 200watts and performance wise only increased minimally? So the prophecy has been fulfilled... big gpus are set to die and with 9800GX2's more mature drivers scalled better than the 280 on crysis, the biggest gpu test. of course we yet too see how this card performs in real life tommrow

Fixed.

As for the benchmarks themselves... Well I think we should still wait for proper benchmarks with mature drivers. If you look at the 3870X2 when that was first benchmarked, the drivers used were immature. Since they have matured, people on here have said that it's very close to the 9800GX2 in performance.

You guys need to realize that this is barely beating their last-gen flagship. It doesn't matter if its 2 GPUs against 1 GPU we are comparing last-gen flagship to next-gen flagship.
