Overclock Won't Go No Higher Than 2.6Ghz [E6400]

Hi,

I've had a bit of problem recently and I can't put my finger on it so I want to find out from someone here who knows more about Overclocking than I do.
[NOTE: I know how to Overclock, I'm not a total n00b.]

I've got a Core2 E6400 @ 2.1ghz. I have a Gigabyte 945P-S3.
I've been playing around to see what I can get it as. I got it to 2.8ghz last night, and I run a Stress Test all through the night. I woke up and everything was all clear and fine. Everything passed.

My PC then needed a reboot, as after doing the test during the night, it was kinda slow..
I rebooted and the display didn't show up. I switched the computer off completely and switched it back on. It loaded, but then come up a display
"OC fail, please enter setup to change OC fail settings."

So.. i thought, hang on. i done a stress test and everything come back clear. Odd, as seeing as people have managed to overclock the E6400 over 3Ghz before now.
So, it come up Press Delete to Enter Bios or F1 to boot into windows. I booted into windows, and was all fine. I rebooted again, and same as before, display never come on till I turned off the PC and back on.
I dropped the overclock down to 2.7ghz which was (340FSBx8).
Booted into windows fine, uptlil I rebooted.
I dropped it down to 325FSB which was at 2.6ghz. Booted into windows, rebooted, but then the display come up straight away. Awesome.
I tried 330FSB, and same happened as before, so i can only go as high as 325x8 rated at 2.6GHz.

I even upped the Voltage by 0.1v and 0.2, but that still not luck.

I'm sure some of you are saying, try updating your Bios. I did that, uptil my PC wouldn't boot at all, so I had to take the battery out for 10 minutes, and reset all the Bios.

I went over to OcForums and a member on there has a E6400 and said he can barely run his at 2.7/2.8 Stable.

I've even tried upping the FSB Voltage by 0.2v

Is this a basic wall I can't go no further?\\

Also.. right now I'm running at 2.6ghz at 1.08v stable.

Many Thanks.

That's got to be undervolted - try raising VCore and see how stability goes. You should be "safe" up to 1.5V on an E6400 (cooling dependent, I wouldn't push stock HSF that far). Sometimes there is a "wall", where you can't get stable, but raising FSB clock further gets past the instability - I've never had it though, maybe some others have??

I'm not going no where near 1.5v.

the highest really the E6400 can go is around 1.4 maximum before getting to hot.

It's common that some E6400's just won't go higher than 2.6.. where some have reached over 3ghz.

I'm running it @ 2.6Ghz on a 1.08v, Idling at 24-25c and loading at 35c max.
I'm not going to change that.

Your motherboard is holding you back greatly. My old Abit AB9(P965) wouldn't go past 330 FSB(IIRC) no matter what settings. I just thought I had a poor overclocking chip and then I got my Abit IP35 Pro and was able to hit 3.6 at 1.5v. But either way it needs much more vcore. I'm surprised that It can run 2.6 undervolted.

I'm shocked its run well. I done a stress test for 12 hours, and it's been fine. I've had it like this for about 2-3 days now, no problems what so ever.

No hang up, no BSODs.

I don't know which stepping you've got, but it doesn't matter as both have the same stats here

i'm quite convinced it has to do with a false bios setting/bad OC mobo... If he can run 2.6 at such a low vcore then he can run it to 3.0 for sure. It isn't a stability problem it's just that weird error at the post.
