Returning Memeber Help set my head right on bus speeds

After a long break (or we can call it visit to Overclockers rehab lol) I once again have the bug. When last I visited the site on a regular basis. The P4 3.4 HT CPU was top of the line, and with a custom build watercooling setup that made use of the FREEZING cold winter air in NY states I was pushing over 4ghz stable.

After spending way to much money on that project I dropped off the radar saving for college.

We'll I've once again got the bug but its been so long that I need a quick refresher course.

Nothing to specific really but Im running a MSI mobo using the 650i chipset

a Pentium D 840 extreme (3.2ghz)

Is it now typical to run you mobo (CPU) FSB much faster than that of your RAM?

In my case the FSB of my CPU is listed at 800 and at the time DDR800 was the norm (which is what I have)

My motherboard supports bus speeds up to 1333 but every where I read there really isnt DDR2 ram out there that will run at that speed (or at least not much considering all the DDR2 mobo's that have a 1333 fsb rating). From what I keep reading DDR technically only will run at a max of 800 and the 1066 and up chips are simply selected at the factory as 800 chips that are kind of factory rated to overclock to 1066.

Again it's been years since I have had any length discussion or given much more than half a though to bus speeds and what would be the best combination. But from what I remember CPU and RAM where pretty much always ran at 1:1.

I will soon be upgrading to a Q6600 most likely or possibly a QX6850 and just wanted to get my head back where it should be before I go tweaking stuff.

Hm... maybe come winter i'll even pull out that watercooling kit again

You don't need to worry about the 1:1 ratio. Just o/c your CPU as fast as you can/want, then go and o/c your RAM as fast as you can/want. It doesn't make any difference if your RAM is running faster than your CPU.
