A lot of my friends are running various different 8800 GT cards. If you're going to SLI I would nab two GT cards, but if a single card is your game I'd get a GTS, like previously mentioned, better cooling, higher OC potential (out of the box), more SP's, etc. Though the performance difference is minimal you can still actually 'see/feel' it the performance difference. So if you're not on a supertight budget, I'd get a GTS and if budget is a tad more flexible, I would get a 9800 for a few bones more with higher OC than the 8 series plus from what I hear/read, nVidia's drivers favour the 9 series more.

Get a GTS now. And later when the prices come down get another for SLI. GTS's in SLI are pretty sick.

I would go with the 8800GT. For the price range you gave, just buy 2 and SLI them. Its only $50 more.

24" monitor (if your sig is correct) = 8800GTS
20" (and under) = 8800GT
