Q6600 Air Cooler?

Thread Starter
I searched for a thread like this but didn't find one, soooo....

Okay, the main reason I haven't taken my CPU past 2.8Ghz is because the thing get's hot. It likes to idle around 40c, and can even get up to 60-70c under a load. If I try to take it any further, I'm getting into 80c temps. I don't quite want to go to water cooling yet, and I'm also helping the Antec 1200 case I'm hoping to get will help some, but I still need a good air cooler.

Price isn't really a problem, so long as it stays under $100.
Thx ahead!

--EDIT--
Oh yeah, room temp is around 76-78F.... we try to keep it warmer for summer.

T.R.U.E (Thermal Right Ultra Extreme) or OCZ Vendetta 2!

Or a cheaper one Tuniq Tower 120.

IFX-14 since it's the current champ if you have space in that 'generic' case, if not a TRUE.

Now it's overpriced for the cooling performance it dishes out... the tuniq tower, ocz vendetta 2 and xigmatek HDT-S1283 all easily beat it out and cost $10-20 less... to the OP, these are the 3 coolers you want to look at if you're on a budget ($30-45)....

As for the best Q6600 Air Cooler, that would be either the IFX-14 or TRUE depending on what you're looking for in an air cooler...

If both were to use (2) 120x38s moving 110CFM and both were properly lapped, they would be about on par... Where the IFX-14 really shines is when you want quieter operation... the TRUE has very dense fin structure causing it to require high CFM, high dba, high static pressure (i.e. 120x38s with 90+CFM) fans... The IFX-14 on the other hand, has a sparser fin structure, allowing it to cool very effectively without needing loud expensive fans...

I was faced with this same choice myself and decided to go with the IFX-14 since I didn't want to purchase 120x38s and already had some 120x25s sitting around.... I have to say, I'm fairly impressed with my results - mid 20C idle and ~58C on load (3.6GHz with 1.5V)

Yeah, I'll hopefully have that Antec 1200 by the time I install it... I'll have to check it out.

--EDIT--
Holy Crap... That thing is HUGE!!!

So what size fans should I pick up for it, 2 120mm's, right?

I would say 38mm's all the way, but weight is probably an issue. If you want to take full advantage of the IFX-14, go with Noctua fans, if not there's some Scythes which are nearly as good, and some that are louder but yielding better temps. Silence, Power, or combination?

Quick question:
I was planning on buying an OCZ memory cooler as well, but it looks like the IFX-14 overlaps the RAM Dimm's, therefore making it where I wouldn't be able to... is it so big that it actually does that?

Also, how much of a difference is there between the TRUE and the IFX-14?
And How much did the IFX lower your temps? I really can't overclock ANY, without it overheating. (Although granted, I should probably reseat my heatsink, I don't have any AC5 anywhere lol)
