Noob after a bit of advice

Basically I decided to build my own rig ,I've never done it before but got a bit of knowledge of pc's from a city and guilds I done years ago but anyway I’ve been using an IT works pc I bought from comet for the last 5 years and its rubbish constantly crashing , So I thought it was time to move up with the times bearing in mind I have’nt a clue about what’s good and what’s not so done a bit of research and picked up an Asus P5B motherboard , Pentium 4 3.00ghz 775,1g of ddr2, 250 gig seagate sata harddrive , ati radeon HD 2400 pro graphics card , card reader and the old dvd writer and cd rewriter from the old computer (ide), to go with that I bought a new tower which was a funky galaxy 3 which came with a 450w power supply and an 90mm fan on the side once I got all that I then bought a Coolmaster hyper tx2 heatsink cooler an exhaust fan and then decided to get a 120mm fan for the back. After I put all that together I loaded up XP home edition onto the hard drive and voila everything works great except it doesnt appear to be much quicker at general working than the 5 year old one I had before. I then discovered overclocking and decided to have a go with the AI overclocking software to acheive a bit more out of the processor which was not alot mind you. The temps around the processor seem to be around the 51 degrees on idle and about 65 when at 100% which after doing a bit of reading is probably too high but the rest of the system stays at around 35/37 degrees.

sorry for the long post but just basically after a but of feedback on how to improve things ie temps and general speed of the system plus if I made any good decisions on what hardware I bought, plus im not a hardcore gamer so im not looking at having a super fast machine that will handle anything just something thats quicker than average.

Any help appreciated

Nick
