Want an HTPC. Need help.

Thread Starter
I am wanting to build an HTPC and need some help on getting a parts list together. Budget is going to be around $800-$900. Don't really have any preference on anything but I was told to get a 780G mobo and a phenom x3 but it's not set in stone. The only thing I have a preference for is a super white, simple case.

Hrm, I recommend using a e7200 they run pretty good and make sure you use Ubuntu. Check out "ubuntu htpc" on google.

I've always liked the P180 case, you might not like it tho.

800.00 seems high for a HTPC

I have 3 of them and the cheapest one I have was around 200.00

if you plan on watching Blue-ray or High def movies I would suggest a 8000 or 9000 series nVidia card as they offload the conversion from the CPU to the GPU....

Even saying that my HTPC that I run in my living room consist of a TForce 550 motherboard and a Brisbane 4000 CPU (at 2800mhz 1.25v) and 2gigs of ram and a 7600gt video card and it runs high def no issues....even pulling high def from the server...

and thats even on a 3 year old sata hard drive with slow speeds...

the only reason to get a kick ass CPU and video card is if you plan to use the HTPC to game and I also do that...I play SINS and Vegas2 and Grid and NFS and a few others on it and it plays fine....

I got about 300.00 wrapped in that one...

even saying that...if you want to spend the whole budget on something you can play movies and game with I got just the thing for you....

list....

nice HTPC case...99.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811156200

ASUS P5E-VM HDMI socket 775 129.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131237

Q6600 (or Q6700) 209.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017

Ram....any ddr2-800 will do...40.00

hard drive....WD640 AAKS (because it's fast) 99.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218

throw in a tuner card and a Video card and you're good to go...

I have the same rig and I got a EVGA 9600gt....runs everything I can throw at it and total cost to me was 750.00 with everything I got...

$800 seems a little high since I will only be watching movies, burning DVDs/bluray on it. But I will be using it as a computer at college so it needs to be decent. How about we knock it down to $600 and buy some amazing speakers for it? (speakers not included in the $600).

EDIT: Oh and I will not be gaming on it.

Right now I'm running an HTPC in my small room, along with my current sig rig and it gets pretty hot in here, even with AC running (doesn't help that I think our duct work is **** and I don't get as much cold air pumped in here). But my Opty 165 HTPC adds a lot of heat and I can imagine any quad core amd/intel rig would do the same. A quad core rig is overkill for an htpc and unnecessary for what you would be doing with it.
When I rebuild my HTPC, I'm going to be looking into an low cost, low power setup. A 780g board paired up with a 45w AM2 cpu - either a Athlon 64 X2 4050E, a 4450E, or a 4850E to keep the heat down.
The 780g chipset will allow you HD TV Out in 1080p, and will still be able to play games like NHL08, Fifa08, and even Company of Heroes I hear. It will also only cost you around 300-350 tops for the mobo, cpu & ram.

There aren't many simple white cases... I checked around for 2 months for my ex-GF. There are a few but tend to be ugly or overly expensive. Honestly, you would be better off getting a nice case and painting it yourself.

Products are at Newegg, shop around for lower prices though:
$65 AR, 780G: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186141
$77, X2 4450e (45w): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103256
$70, 2x2GB GSkill DDR2-800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122
$90x2, RAID0 Wester Digital GP 500GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...00+to+7200+RPM
$70 AR, Corsair 450VX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...450w%2bcorsair

Total: $462 plus shipping.

Add in your choice of case, OS, and optical drive. I would have recommended a HS but it depends on the case.
Once again...
