? on SLI, setup and use of other ports

Thread Starter
I currently have an MSI P6N SLI Platinum mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130081

I currently have 1 MSI NX8800GT and I am about to purchase a 2nd for SLI

I simply can not live with out my dual display setup however so I was going to purchase a cheap ATI card to use just to out put to the 2nd monitor.

I had read with previous boards I and friends have had that when you use one of the PCIx slots or maybe it was when you use SLI that certain PCI slots or something become disabled.

I currently have a PCI TV tuner in the lower most PCI slot. I couldnt really fit anything in the PCI slot below the upper most PCIx slot.

However if it will still work I could use the other PCI slot or even the PCI 1x slot up to.

Does anyone know of any reason why those ports wouldnt work while using SLI? Just trying to find out before I go ordering stuff.

Thanks

It was my understanding that by using SLI - you lose the ability to run multiple monitors. If you can throw in an additional PCI card and that works - let me know because I miss my 2nd monitor.

Well from everything I keep reading it works, but it needs to be an ATI card (or something not Nvidia) or the nvidia drivers try to take control of that card too.

read this

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=6269

But ya should work great the only problem is getting a 3rd video card into my PC with my TV tuner

Took another look at it and it seems the 2 PCI slot form the bottom will be covered by the cooler on the 2nd video card.

so either i find one thats lower profile which looks like it would fit in the 3rd PCI slot (in between the PCI-E slots)

or I find one that is PCI-E 1x for the little thing up to that hardly looks like it would support a modem let alone hold up a video card lol but ehh if it works.

The only thing I dont know is will that slot run while the others are running SLI?

You can also get a usb tv tuner, it plugs in a usb slot, and you plug in your coax and there you go, I dont think it is ati/nvidia, let me find it.

weird, I just saw this for the first time, but there are actually 33 USB tv tuners for sale at newegg. Guess theyve been around for awhile, so if you cant fit what you have, USB is an option.

Ya I knew there were USB tuners out there and they have been out a while, but I didnt not want to go that way.

Any of the USB tuners I have come accross all use software encoding, which mines lots of CPU cycles when im recording a show, where as now with my hardware encoding card I get very little if any.

I ordered my 2nd 8800GT for SLI and a ATI x1050 or something that uses a PCI-E x1 slot from what i've read that should work.
