The themal paste on my 8800's looks like that. what was nvidia and EVGA thinking when they was aplying the stuff. WAY TO MUCH USED. I guess they think no one will see it under the heatsink.

It's sad how much TIM is applied in the factories. Might I suggest trying OCZ Freeze instead of AS5 though. It'll shave off another couple degrees.

The sad thing is, with the mountain of "thermal clay", my card actually ran cooler than with AS5 (applied the middle dot, and also the "Card spread" method). I was going to get OCZ freeze, but I heard it's a pain to spread with a card which I usually prefer to do.

Although, my card is idling at 53c (40%) right now and it's quite hot in my room but that is unacceptable! Reseating is addictive!

Turns out AS5 was a bad idea . My card still runs generally cool (idling at low 50s, 40% speed in 80+ degree weather), but still sucks knowing that mountain of thermal "clay" outperformed AS5 (reseated around 4 times - using dot method, credit card, very little and a good amount - to have all the bases covered).

I replaced the paste on my 8800GT a few days ago and the temps are about the same.
