Razer Barracuda HP-1 vs Zalman Theater 6 (ZM-RS6F+M)

So tomorrow I plan on getting some new headphones. I kind of want a headset which is why I looked at the barracuda first, but I noticed the Zalman headphones were less than half the price and also offered 5.1 surround. I do want surround sound in the headphones, by the way, mostly because I'm curious about it. So I thought it might be better to get the Zalman headphones and just use a separate mic. So the Razors do have the advantage of having the mic included and attached, and the mic will probably work a bit better (probably not by enough to matter if I am just using it to talk in Vent while gaming though).

The stores near me have a very limited selection, and these are the only two surround sound headphones/headsets in stock, so I can't really go for anything much higher quality.

And I will also be the first to admit I'm not an audiophile, my pitch & relative pitch are alright but I'm far from great when it comes to detecting small differences in quality. So if the difference is really small it probably won't matter for my usage. They are going to be used mostly for gaming and music, not so much for movies or anything else.

So, does anybody have any opinions about these?

Thanks for your time.

I would say go with a headset and not a separate mic and head phones. Also 5.1 surround for music... Personally I'm a 2.1 because I don't like hear instruments from every direction... Like to hear it as one group...

Sorry I couldn't be more help

Yeah, I agree that 5.1 is kind of wasted in music. But more and more games are becoming surround sound, and I keep hearing people saying how much they love it. Plus I game about as much as I listen to music, so it's an important factor.

Don't apologize though, any advice is great. Thank you for your input

I have razer headphones which are great especially for gaming but they would be more amazing with the sound card BUT... you don't need the sound card for the headphones.

My opinion is to stay away from 5.1 headphones. Getting headphones with a large enough soundstage is going to provide the "surround sound" effect.

Depending on your budget, get the Audio-Technica AD700's/A700's with a cheapy clip-on mic. You'll thank me later.

It would be nice to have a larger selection, especially one that included the headphones you suggested. One problem is newegg doesn't ship to Canada, another is that I was hoping to get something in person tomorrow rather than wait on shipping.

Although the stay away from 5.1 headphones statement may be helpful. Just out of curiosity how does a soundstage make it seem like surround? Does it just make it sound "larger" and feel more immersive or will there actually be like some kind of artificial surround feeling? And how would this compare to something programmed to produce actual 5.1 or higher audio, such as most newer games that I play like Age of Conan or Crysis, etc?

Sorry for the newb questions, but I always enjoy learning.

Also I just found a bunch more reviews for the Zalmans and they seem pretty mediocre, I think I might be going with the Razors at this point.

The soundstage is how big, and open the sound is. Kind of hard to describe.

Theres a huge amount of people on this forum that will agree with him on this one. I happen to be one of those persons. I own the AD700s and they sound amazing with music and games. The open sound is something that is hard to describe. It is much less bassy than closed cans, but the bass and sound is perfect. I can't even imagine how the sound would be if I were to get a better sound card.

But that's the thing; I'm not a huge audio nut. For me I rarely comment on the quality of the sound provided the sounds themselves are great and in place. Anything tops what I'm currently using for a headset (Jabra BT125 bluetooth, i.e. 1 ear and pretty uncomfortable) and the headsets I’m looking at will definitely beat my weak speakers. It certainly destroys the earbuds I got with my Samsung T9 MP3 player. And even these beat what I was using on my old computer, less than a year ago, by a large margin. This was a computer where I would play games with the sound muted a lot of the time.

Those are the competition, and the competition isn't tough.

The point I made is that I do not want to order something I want to get it today, so selection is thin. Very thin. Every set of Sennheiser headphones is out of stocks, trust me I know they are a great company and checked their products before anything else. The things that seem closest in quality to these are like Creative FATAL1TYs (meh, not really), the ICEMAT Steel Sound 5H (I don't really know about this one, I didn't really look into it too much, now that I do it looks a lot better than the Zalman and in competition with the razor), a JBL 410, and a slew of Logitech headsets that don't look very comfortable at all.

It sucks, I know, but I don't need them to be a very long lasting thing, I just got sick of using what I currently am.

Anyways, I think I'm going to follow Andyroo's advice and grab the Barracuda unless I can find some more stuff recommending the ICEMAT SteelSound over it in the next couple hours. I guess this was what I expected to happen anyways, I’m still vastly curious about headphone surround sound, since near my computer there is currently really no way to set up real surround sound. I mean, for my next step I will probably go for something nicer, some Sennheisers or Audio-Technicas, or better yet replace my onboard sound to take advantage of it, but for now it's not really about great quality just good quality. That's all I really need right now.

Nice sig setup, The Rocker, but is it really worth mentioning the labtec mic?
Looks great though.

Also thanks everyone on the advice. Whether it made a difference or not on this purchase, it certainly helped on my next/future purchase, so it was very helpful. I can’t wait to get the kind of things you guys are recommending and a decent soundcard drive them.
