Please a little help with an OC *almost got it down* E8400

OK. So this is my first OC but I am a systems engineer so I am picking it up pretty quickly. Anyhow, I picked up an E8400, Gigabyte P35-DS3L, and OCZ Vendetta 2 yesterday and said "I want 4GHZ.". After reading a large amount posts across the internet I began my journey. I have successfully overclocked to 3.6GHZ and 3.8GHZ. I am having trouble getting the 4GHZ totally stable. I've had it where I almost was comfortable and then a program would disappear or give off "blah has encountered a problem and needs to close". Anyhow, my settings are as follows.

FSB: 445x9
Vcore: 1.36xxx
MCH: +.02
Memory Timings: 5-5-5-16
Mem Volt: 2.2v

Current Idle Temp: 38-40
Load: 48-52

At the time of this post, the last thing I have done is raise the mch to .02 and the Vcore to 1.36. I am currently 1hr into Orthos. I'm not sure if anyone has any suggestions. I never experience a "hard-crash". Just programs disappearing and encountering problems. The memory is Patriot Extreme PC6400 and default timings are 4-4-4-12.

Welcome jhoffman,
One thing to know about Overclocking: It seems your doing a well job OCing. One thing to clarify successful Ocing is passing 10hr + of CPU and Mem stress testing. After you succesfully passed small fps and memtest for 10hr + (that's 20hrs total) and passed without errors, then it is safe to OC. Do small stress test on orthos and post the result here. Every single chip differs even though the chips have the same model number, which means that guys setting wouldn't always apply to your setting.

Gibson yes sir this has already been done. Thanks.

Legendor my 3.6 and 3.8 were 24 hours tests. I haven't gotten past 4hrs of stability with the current setup.

I forgot to add I had a successful memtest run with those timings.

Sorry just realized I said I picked my equipment up yesterday. Was a few days ago. Overclocking testing is taking up so much time
