Can yo use 2 PCI Express x16 cards and a x1 ?

Im looking to run SLI but keep my dual monitors (and really add a 3rd)

im using an MSI P6N SLI platinum mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130081

If i have a set of 8800GT's in both the PCI-E x16 slots

could I add a 3rd video card to the PCI-E x1 slot?

I know this could work by adding the third card, see this -> http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=6269

but I just dont know if that x1 slot will work with the other 2 cards in the x16 slots.

I thought that some where in the documentation for my mobo or maybe my friends I read that when using the x16 slots the x1 slot was disabled? or maybe it was the PCI slot below the x16 slot I just cant remember.

Anyone using a x1 slot for anything? while using at least one of the x16 slots?

Looks like I found my answer, I think

Searching on newegg found a card for this purpose

and the last reviewer states...

"Other Thoughts: I bought this to drive a second monitor because I have to reboot to disable SLI to get my second monitor to work. Raise your hand if you actually enjoy rebooting windows . . . Yeah, me neither. I chose this so I can move it over to a new rig when I upgrade. I originally wanted to get a standard PCI card for the same purpose, but that interface someday will no longer exist, and I'm out of PCI-e x16 slots because of the aforementioned SLI setup. This setup has worked great with or without the ATI control panel. Plays very nice with nVidia cards (mine, at least) Note: I recently took a Club-SLI survey that asked very direct questions about a second monitor and rebooting, leading me to believe they may fix this issue at some point in the future. Just so everyone knows what actually worked together, this is my setup: Asus A8N-SLI Premium (socket 939) 4400+ X2 nVidia 7800GTX 256mb (1 Leadtek & 1 BFG in SLI) *HIS X1550 256MB"

So looks like you can make use of those ports while using SLI... I think..

we shall see! ordering from new egg now

The third video card would have to be an 8800gt. Good luck finding one with a x1 slot.

Actually, for him to run three cards for extra display outputs, he needs to have a ATI card with his two nVidia cards, if he buys another nVidia card, it won't let him run the third one with a extra monitor or two attached.

I say get the cheapest ATI card you can buy for the display, probably go PCI if you have spare slots, since its near impossible to get PCIe 1x Graphics Cards afaik.

Ya from what i've read the 3rd card has to be a "non nvidia card" otherwise the nvidia drivers will take control and disable dual monitor support even on the 3rd card while SLI is active.

I was able to find a ATI x1550 for a x1 slot (as I dont have any free PCI slots) for about $100 on newegg.

Why not just use a PCI card? They are cheaper and work just as well.

Well Microsoft can kiss my %#Y@($* man this pisses me off...

I drop 250 bucks in video cards because Nvidia cant figure out a way to run 2 displays and now Microsoft wont allow you to run video cards from to companies in the same PC.
