DDR2 Upgrade Options

Hello all,

I feel an imminent RAM upgrade in the near future. I'm currently running 2GB of double-sided Tracers 1066 at 1146MHz (2.2v). My board is limited to DDR2 and I'd like to keep it reasonably fast (1000MHz+).

Basically, there's a few options that I'm considering:

- pick up a 1066 2X2GB kit (this G-SKILL kit looks best for the $$) and try to run my current ram with this set (may or may not be compatible) = 6GB or 4GB total
- try to find some an additional used double-sided 1066 Tracers set (OC'ed if possible) = 4GB total
- buy and overclock a DDR2-800 2X2GB kit (something like this.. timings are nice!) and try to run my current ram underclocked (with tighter timings) with this set (may or may not be compatible) = 6GB or 4GB total

I'm using Vista Ultimate x64 primarily so all available RAM will be used. I will not be using aftermarket cooling. My case has good airflow (1 intake, 2 exhaust rad fans, 2 case exhaust, 4 exhaust fans on the rad in the roof) and a mesh side panel.

Best options for performance/price and just for performance? Any advice greatly appreciated!

... I will be building a new rig for school in the fall so if I have some RAM lying around it will be used then.

The G.Skill kit you linked is a good choice. As for mixing the G'Skill's with your current RAM kit, don't. Mixing RAM like that can hinder overclocks and may cause stability issues. In regards to how much RAM to use 4GB will be plenty. Even though the OS is 64bit most of the programs you use will still be 32bit (I'm assuming unless you do video or photo editing) and won't use above 3.5GB. The exception to this however is if you are a heavy multitasker and even then the odds of running out of RAM with 4GB installed are slim.

I definitely would not mix ram but you are going to have a hard time comparing anything to Ballistix Tracers. Why not just get another 2GB set of those?

I would definitely prefer to find another set of Tracers. The LEDs are a little gimmicky but I really like the way they look in my case!

Problem is, online retailers won't guarantee whether I will receive the double-sided or newer, single-sided Tracers. Therefore I would have to try to find a used set or double-sided sticks to buy... maybe from one of the good people here on OCN??

I am sort of expecting to have troubles OC'ing 4x1GB sticks, but would be fine with running 4GB Tracers at their stock speed for 1066MHz. The extra 80MHz probably doesn't do much in for performance anyway... but, this being OVERCLOCK.net, I will certainly try!

If anyone is looking to selling a 2x1GB set of double-sided 8500 Ballistix Tracers (and is willing to ship to BC, Canada), PM or reply to this thread. Thanks!
