[TT] AMD Phenom looking to be in a world of hurt

As it is, AMD are really struggling to attract much interest in their underwhelming lineup of Phenom desktop processors. The only good thing they have going for them is the pricetag, making it easier for people on a budget to become a part of the quad-core crowd.

If they think that's what's going to keep them afloat though, they'd better re-think their strategy, and very soon. Intel are planning to close the gap entirely next quarter by releasing new entry-level Core 2 Duo and Quad processors that will be as cheap as chips!

Talk of a Core 2 Quad Q8000 lineup is getting stronger, with a Q8200 offering to kick it off which sits at 2.33GHz and contains 4MB of shared L2 cache on a 1333MHz FSB. The most hurtful aspect of this as far as AMD's Phenom range go, is the price. Several asian websites are reporting that the Q8200 will come in at a mere $203, just slightly above what AMD charge at the moment for its 2.2GHz X4s/2.4GHz X3s.

Get work on that Fusion project before Intel completes theirs and then we have something to talk about AMD.

very lacking 'news' don't people realize the q8200 is worse than the q6600 and costs more?

isn't this obvious???

frankly, i think the whole TLB error was WAY overblown (one can encounter random BSODs more often i think) and hopefully Shanghai will be able to recover some of the lost prestige...

I agree with you about the TLB erratum. AMDs PR should have just stated what an errata is. If AMDs PR wasn't :turd: AMD probably would be approaching or even reaching profitability.

I'm getting one of the Triple Cores for mums HTPC, She wanted good encoding performance and it was cheaper and from what I've seen, quite a bit faster than Intel Dual Cores in the encoding she was using, for cheaper.

Why are people so hyped about Fusion? It's just a regular CPU with lowly integrated graphics on it. It's for laptops.

What people should care about is Bulldozer, which might actually be good, provided they stick to the roadmap.

Well, AMD will have their day again and I'll be buying at least 1 of every processor they put out on a market.

I've got a Socket A, Socket 754, Socket 939, Socket AM2, and I'm waiting on the Shanghai 3.0+ Ghz Quad Core for my AM2+ and I think I might go ahead and buy that Socket F right now since I found such a great deal on it.

Hell, if I had 200 million to throw away, I'd invest in AMD to try and give them an edge up and get free stuff

I don't think so.

The fusion is not a integrated graphics but a GPU like a 3870 on a CPU and like has its own brains. It will be good for small cases, HTPC, cars, servers, and laptops.

I was thinkin about going DFI 790FX + 9850 Phenom BE, but then i realised diversity was non existant and we must all have the same setups to be elite =P
