Unfortunately, I believe that's a pretty bad board when it comes to overclocking. You may want to look into getting a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L or something similar.

Your board will restrict you and i have to agree with the above poster, the P35 chipsets are stonking clocking boards.

From my own experience with an E6600, i had one on a P5N32-E SLI 680i board and got mine upto 3.8Ghz.

And I've currently got my E6600 at 3.6GHz on my P35-DS3L board. I could go higher if I wanted, but I'm just worried about the CPU temperature since it's running 24/7.

A 1.2Ghz overclock is nothing to be sniffed at. I'd be proud as hell

IF your board does not overclock the Q6600 well then I would look into BSEL mod. It gives you a 1333 FSB and 3.0ghz on ANY board and then you can push it a little more with the BIOS to maybe 3.2 or 3.4

i read this while doing a google search

PCSTATS has generally had an easy time overclocking MSI motherboards in the 6 years we've been at this gig, so the expectations were good as the tweaking began in earnest with the MSI P965 Platinum motherboard.

With an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 processor and a 2GB set of Corsair Twin2X2048-6400C4 installed, the MSI P965 Platinum had everything it needed to fly... Before overclocking began the memory was first set to run in DDR2-533 MHz mode, this way it wouldn't hold the motherboard back.

whats that mean...

whats the difference between the p965 neo and platinum as that gets decent results

what program do u recomend using i have cpuz 1.45

and its an E6600 not Q ^
im not after anything super just round the 3gig mark would b nice specially for my first overclock
also what makes the p35 board so good, extra options..?

The MSI board isn't THAT bad for overclocking, especially if you are only doing mild overclocking.

I would suggest setting it to 8 x 400 and increase the nb voltage one notch, set vcore to ~1.44 and you should be good to go!

ok it doesnt even boot if i have it set over 310 and have to reset the cmos
the next thing is i cant find where to up the voltage of the nb n vcore i swear it doesnt have that option
so thats running at stock votage im guessing
using prime 95 for stress testing and core temp for temps
also the temps are hitting 55 and its a cold day about (10-15degrees C) thats running with stock cooling and the side off the case (improves the temp by 1-2 degrees and slows the temp increase a fair bit)
whats setting the lower multiplyer help in and how do i do that
