So i did the dirty...

Thread Starter
and installed ubuntu. Is it just me or is it the most user friendly thing ever.... its soo cute. I feel like im not a power user anymore. Can anyone recommend a distro that actually makes me feel empowered? I want to spec in networking and security when/if i go to uni and i feel linux would be a good starting ground.

Fedora, Mandriva, Suse though I think you have to pay for Suse now but don't quote me on that. Fedora is really good though. Zenwalk is decent. Debian has had some good reviews. Try LinuxXP. There is SymphonyOne.

Check this site for a list of Linux Distros. http://distrowatch.com/

Here's a SS of Zenwalk

so you are saying ubuntu is too userfriendly? i think that is part of the beauty of ubuntu, it has a nice gui interface when you want to use that, but there is always the trusty terminal with all the real power just like every other distro.

Gentoo from stage1. If it's not enough - LFS.

Run FreeBSD in text only mode. That makes you feel really badass.

FreeBSD console does not support widescreen resolutions and unicode.

I completely dissagree. Im sorry but Ubuntu is just as powerfull as any other distro. Sometimes i wonder why people bash Ubuntu as being too user friendly. YOU CAN BE A POWER USER in ubuntu. It is designed to bring Linux to the masses. Is it really so bad if joe shmoe wants to play with linux because he is tired of all the windows crap. I know YOU are not bashing ubuntu but i guess i just see alot of post about how ubuntu is not a real distro and all that mess.

Slackware is where it's at if you want to learn the hard way.

BTW, I'm also going to college for Networking/Security, and I'm a big time fan of Backtrack it is the security suite. I use it everyday.
