[Ars Technica] alt.blocked: Verizon blocks access to whole USENET hierarchy - Page 3

usenet? From reading more, it just seems like another hugely inefficient way of fixing a problem. If you can't find a way to target only the pedophiles then don't do it at all.

So most of you are saying you support child pornography?

While yes, it was stupid of them to block all groups, but hey, they'll be stopping ones with child pornography.

So let's ban automobiles to stop drunk driving...

While we're at it, why not go ahead and ban fire? You know how many problems that pesky little devil causes?

Well you obviously aren't very good at analogies. The total number of people in each group doesn't matter much at all, the percentages do. If we are talking about principal, then the percentages don't matter much either.

That's a good point. While Usenet has been known to be notorious for illegal pornography, it hardly seems like a good cause to ban Usenet completely. I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of Usenet content is legal. The thing is though, Verizon is a private business and therefore pretty much have the right to "ban" any websites they see fit. We'll just have to see how this sits with customers overall. It's a free market.

Oh you crazy kids that think the "internetz" is just Facebook and torrents. Not much better than thinking it's a series of tubes, if you ask me.

Usenet is the old-school precursor to web forums like this one. By encoding a binary as text, you can post pretty much anything. The recipient has to reconvert it back to binary, of course. But most newsreaders handle the encoding/decoding automatically these days (and by these days I mean "ten years ago", since Usenet clients are not exactly hot commodity software these days.)

They are not shutting out or blocking Usenet traffic; they are just no longer providing the alt.* hierarchy on their own Usenet servers. Usenet has worked this way from its inception, all server providers are free to offer or not offer any group(s) they choose. Anyone who really wants them can get them from somewhere else, albeit probably for a price.

And it's not illegal...no one has to carry data on their servers that they do not want to. You can't require a magazine stand to carry pr0n magazines, and you can't require a Usenet provider to carry pr0n newsgroups. In fact, since the child porn content is illegal to begni with, the fact that it exists on the cable companies' servers may very well make them liable for making child pr0n available!

Yep. In fact, I originally heard that TW was shutting down their Usenet servers altogether, not just the alt.* hierarchy like Verizon is doing here. Shutting down just alt.* is better, but I can understand why they would want to shut down the entire server farm...they say that only 2% of their user base are Usenet users. Not exactly a profit center, I would think.

Again, they're not blocking anything; they just won't be offering this Usenet hierarchy on their own servers.

Look at cuy50's post...Usenet is about as far underground as anything gets on the net these days. Half of the young whippersnappers out there don't even know what it is.

Agree. They really should not be clamping down on the alt.* group as a whole here, they should be eliminating the problem groups. The problem is that, in the alt.* hierarchy, there is no oversight on group creation; so stamping out one bad group could just lead to someone forming another one with a different name but the same illegal content. So I can, at least partially, understand their action. Doesn't make me very happy though, conceptually I agree with everyone's statements.
