Confusion with Steam and Half-Life 2...

Thread Starter
I purchased The Orange Box a while back, and I have been confused about something ever since. Among the games that it includes are Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: E1, and Half Life 2: E2.

HL2 and HL2:E1 are two separate games and two separate downloads according to Steam. I was previously under the impression that they were the same thing, with HL2:E2 being the sequel to it (them?).

So, what is the difference between plain old HL2, and HL2:E1? Or are they the same thing? Which one should I install?

Oh, and HL2: Lost Coast is just a tech demo for HDR, correct?

HL2:E1 is the sequel to HL2. It happens after the story in HL2. You can get both if you want, just play them in order.

And yeah, Lost Coast is just an HDR demo. It's a single level with commentary from developers.

Yes, Lost Coast is a tech demo. HL2 is the first game in the second generation of half life games. E1 is the first expansion, E2 is the second.

Half Life 2 is a stand-alone game.

Episode 1 is the first episodic sequel. It continues where HL2 left off.

Episode 2 is the second episodic sequel, and builds on EP1.

They're all different from each other and you should install them all and play them in sequence.

Lost Coast is just a tech demo, yes.
