get a new cpu or video card?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to decide between upgrading my cpu which is a e6300 running at 3.5ghz 500x7 and ram at 1:1 1000 at 5-5-5-12. I'm waiting for either the ati 4850 or 4870 but I'm wondering if my cpu will bottleneck the new ati cards, I'm currently running a evga 7900gt running at 730/1690. What are your opinions?

The CPU shouldn't bottleneck the 4850 or 4870. I would definitely upgrade your video card though.

If you get yourself the new 4850/70 , you will see a huge performance difference with that card alone. These days, the Videocard does most of the work in games, so getting a better Videocard will be the best choice. your e6300 is kind of outofdate, would recommend as well the E8400 / E8500 if you are planing to do gaming. If you do intensive video rendering, multiple multitasking programs, etc... go for the the quads.

Upgrade your card. I don't think there will be a bottleneck problem.

E6300 @ 3.5ghz is solid enough, get a video card first.

video card. Upgrading the vid card will take some stress off the cpu b/c, as already stated, video careds do a good amount of the work in games.

I was looking at the q6600 and the e8400 it's around 190 for either, but I don't really play that much games at all and don't really do any kind of video encoding, I just watch movies and stuff and surf the web, but was getting bored and wanted a 4ghz overclock lol however I'm waiting for starcraft 2 if that ever comes out and I'm not sure if my 7900 can keep up with it. I like playing games at 1920x1200 which is my monitor's native resolution. if I decided to get the new ati cards do you think I need to buy a better power supply since mines is only 400w. what do you recommend as a power supply it has to be modular and I don't plan on doing crossfire. i was thinking about the corsiar 620hx power supply.

Even a 3850 or an 8800gt would do you good, and you have a little bit money left over for a CPU/Mobo upgrade.

The Corsair power supplies are really great, lots of people here have them.
