You could probably get 4 or 500 for your current rig. Save up a bit extra and you can have an awsome machine.

this is just an idea of what will OC well.... when choosing your mobo just try & stay with a P35 ....still a good few years in those yet...

Ultimately, this is the conclusion with your hp system. Buying OEM means that when let's say HP planned your pavillian to break within 2 years, you'll not be able to fix it nor improve much. Your computer is 4/10 for performance(not sarcasm). If you have built the same comp with same spec, you would of saved about $200-300. If you are thinking of upgrading some stuff, FORGET IT. It is really a waste of money.

Edit: Sell, and save until $1k. Srry bud, but this is the real situation.

Reload...
Depends on what MB you have and what MB you get.
Many HP MBs made by big MB manufacturers but locked....
So if you happen to attain the same same chip set it should swap out with out an OS reload.

Yea, try to reload first, sometimes you get lucky, but it all depends on what the drivers for your mobo are, and if the new ones are that much different. I upgraded from a Socket A system last week and i ended up needing to do a fresh install, It would POST fine, but then it would BSOD because the Mobo drivers were incompatable. If you cant recover the installation, i'd say keep it as well, and build a new one. I built my new rig for $500 inlcuding monitor. its not the fastest, but its WAY better than what i had.

So you're basically saying that the room the computer is in is under 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Somehow I highly doubt that.
