Linux Fileserver and Norton Ghost

Well, as the title says im in the process of adding to my file server. The issue I am having is that I want to use my file server to store ghost images of the other computers on my home network, or ones that i would add to the network. My network consists of 1xfile server running slackware, a windows vista/slackware station, and a windows xp/vista station, and one windows xp tech station. What i am doing is Ghosting the data across the network from the tech station to my file server. Wiping the HDD i just ghosted and now i want to put the data back on it.

The server is running fine and I am able to store ghost images on it without a problem. The issue is that I have no idea on how to mount the ghost image in order to transfer the data back to the system.

For those that are familiar with Norton ghost it copies your HDD and saves it as multiple image files. Mounting the image files allows you to view the backup you made as just another HDD where you can browse through folder by folder.

What i think i have to do is somehow mount it as a virtual drive so that i can extract the data.

There is another program that caught my attention which is supposed to be similar to Norton Ghost, which is PartImage. I have also read about something about "auto mount" but haven't gone too in depth with it. I am still doing my resarch but figured i would post to see if anyone has any reccomendations.

thx

*EDIT* Please keep in mind that i'm making an image of the whole windows partiton but only want to extract certain files/directories (data), not the whole partition. Like you would when you do a fresh install, you only want to put your data back on.

Hehe good timing, I am working on a similar project here at work and had the exact same question. I am currently stuck loading dvd images on the systems when I could just bootp them (once I figure out how to do that).

BTW have you looked into Mondo/Mindi for your images? <--great software and free!

EDIT: Some quick searching reveals that to use ghost images on the network requires the Ghost Server, tftp and bootp. Still checking

all i've come up with so far is Partimage. I believe that you are able to burn it to a cd and boot off of it or install it. It supports windows and linux, and seems to work similar to Norton Ghost.

Deffinatly something that ill have to read up on, and i will post what my findings are.

Try looking into Windows PE and using pxe booting. Windows PE is a small bootable version of Vista that runs over networks, and you can run various commands including installing operating system. You MIGHT be able to do what you want, but I haven't looked into it much, I currently use it for deploying stock DVD/CD images.

so, what i ended up doing was installing ghost on the other windows computer. This allowed me to mount the drive and transfer the data without a problem. Allthough this is not initially how i wanted to do it, it will have to do.

Basically i have the ghost files stored on the file server >>> mounted the ghost files on another windows machine on the network >>> transfered the files i needed form the mounted drive to the fresh install.

Norton server / or Ghost suite was not needed to do this.
