Very Odd HD Problem

Thread Starter
I have installed different OSs on at least 200 different computers, yet this is the first time I see anything like this. So I hope someone can help.

Ive tried installing XP, SuSe, and Ubuntu, and tried the Live CDs, and nothing works. I'm trying to get XP on here at the end though, so I'm just gonna stick to that for now.

Specs (nothing overclocked):
CPU - PIII Celeron 800MHz
Optical Drive - Memorex DVD-R DL ATAPI-7 drive
SATA Controller - Koutech
Hard Drive - WD Scorpio 160GB SATA 150MB/s or WD Caviar 80GB ATA-100 (old drive)

Now, when trying to install XP everything goes fine until the part where it has to copy files.

First of all, it refuses to copy the controller drivers from the floppy. Yet it can still read them to tell me that I have a 160GB drive that I can format as drive C:.

After i tell it to skip the files that are on the floppy, it starts copying from the CD. But then a few files later it gives the same error again - can't copy file (usually stops on driver.cab, but sometimes on other files too).

So I tried 4 different XP cds - Home, Pro, Pro SP1, Pro SP2 - and they all give me the same error.

Then I tried installing the SATA controller and hard drive in another PC and it worked fine. Also, when trying to boot from it on this PC, it gives the error "NTLDR is missing", so that shows that the hard drive got formatted correctly, and it is able to read the boot sector of both the drive and the partition.

Then I tried using a completely different CDROM and PATA hard drive, without the SATA controller attached. HD was set to Master on channel 1, CDROM set to Master on channel 2. Same error.

Then I tried the CDROM as Master on channel 1 with the SATA controller again, but again it gave the same error.

So by the time I was done with all this, I had tested every piece of equipment on other computers and saw that it was working. Besides, the XP installation seems to have no trouble booting from the CDROM or formatting the HD. It just can't copy.

Any ideas?

Erm... Could you make an image of XP and lay that down with Ghost or something? That's what I do with all my XP installs.

I guess, but every time I try that between chipsets it won't stop BSODing

It might be a faulty ram stick.
Try running memtest86

Bad HDD?? That seems the only constant in all your tests?

XP at the end...
You mean Linux is loaded then you want to load XP?
Its far more friendly to load XP then Linux.

Nah, I tried an 80GB PATA WD Caviar directly on the motherboard as well (its written above). Also, I tested both it and the Scorpio on another system and they worked fine.

@startekee - Good Idea. I started memtest before writing this post, and so far its gotten through 50% of the first pass and no problems. I'll keep it running of course, but lets assume that the memory is fine for now.

No, nothing is loaded now. I mean I tried loading all of those and none of them work, they all give some sort of error. Including the Live CDs.

Yup, tested it on my sig rig and it works fine. It wrote a 700MB ISO, then compared it bit for bit with the original file. And everything was fine.
