Very Odd HD Problem - Page 3

I mean the sata controller sounds like the most likely devil but you have rulled it out by removing it and trying without it. Now I would say if you hadn't it was bad or non compianant to the old board. Because it is PCI specification v2.2 compliant on the sata controller. But ruled it out. By checking to see if the onboards could work with older components fail thats a no go.

Ruled out the Rom by checking it in another pc.

ruled out ram by ram testing.

Ruled out failty Harddrive

Also ruled out it just being a windows xp deal by using the different SP cd's and trying all of the other OS u had.

Only pices left are the CPU and motherboard one of which is fality I would go after the motherboard due to u tried to load with the onboard ide stuff and it didn't work which would lead to a problem in the board ramdomly some where or the Southbridge.

Sorry I took so long to reply, was messing around with the PC a bit.

Its an Azza 601AM. VIA chipset (i forget which, check the pic I took with the camera).

But yeah, right now I think we should assume its not from bad hardware. I mean, all programs seem to work fine except actual OSs. There must be some sort of oddball conflict or something going on that is stopping all OS installations. Let me check the error coming up with Linux, it'll probably be more helpful.

Did you Physicaly remove the card when you tried using the on board Ide with the older harddrive and the rom? if you didn't it still could posibly be the sata controller is pci 2.2v compliant is the board? I'm trying to find some specs but alot of the older boards are not.

Ok, oddly enough SuSe Live decided that its ok to boot now.

So I got to the SuSe desktop, opened up a few programs and whatever, and it works fine. Sees the hard disk and everything.

But I go back to install Windows and the problem is still there.

Yup, removed the card and everything. And SuSe is having no trouble using the drive.

You could be right, but that still doesn't explain why the same problem occurs when the PCI controller isn't connected.

Edit: ok, you changed the post, nvm

I'm pretty sure its something else. I dunno. I'm not saying you are absolutely wrong, but after these few hours of testing I have this gut feeling that its something stupid like a crappy driver.

Crap, now that I think about it, I never tried a different driver. lol.

lol and you know I was just reading some reviews that the drivers that come with it are crap and some have a problem getting them to work with Xp. My only concern is why did it not work when you used the old hardware and hooked it up with the sata card removed? But its worth a shot.
