Until we get more info on that series, we cannot be accurate in our statements and they would not be very useful to the discussion. But if this thread lasts until release, I would be ecstatic to finally be able to compare these cards.

Thank you to all who have responded. And thank you for trying to keep my neutral atmosphere for this thread going.

There has been an argument that though similar in performance to the 9800gx2, the fact remains that this is a single chip card. What are peoples thought on that?

Can anyone offer some incite into wattages of the respective cards?

Thank you, this was the kinda thing I was hoping for. People need to accept though you may have loyalties, that other companies may be able to release a good product. For example thing of all those displaced AMD fans currently running Core 2s? Just because you like a brand doesn't mean you need to ignore performance.

  • Comparison with the 9800gx2
  • Pricing of this card, as well as the GTX260
1)It's an improvement. It's no Geforce 7 -> Geforce 8 though

2)Idle's pretty good. Load is horrendous.

3)I see some pretty big potential.

4)Eh. No comment

5)Expensive...

well the gtx280 die size is a little less than double the size of the die on the GX2, but the GX2 has two of them
gtx280 = 576 mm2
GX2 = 330mm2 x 2

i think the gtx280 is a pretty good card, because it has similar performace of a card that has two cores.

i read that the gtx280 idles at 25w (or about) because it has software embedded into it that will actually underclock itself when not being used in 3d applications.
^^i think that is really cool, and will save energy when optimized in the future.

but i think nvidia's next-gen of cards will (hopefully) be a 55nm revision with the same performace.

overall, i like this card. but it is priced pretty high.
but thats mainly due to the HUGE die.

anyone want to add?

For a while, maybe even until the 55nm die shrink, do you guys believe this will only have a niche market, and by niche market I mean overpriced OEMs, Benchmarkers, and kids with more money than tech know how?

yes,
i think ALOT of people will begin going for ati's new cards as the price/performance ratio is something nvidia can't match. if they priced their cards at what people think they should be at, they would probably be losing money.

probably the enthusiast market or people with the extra cash will buy it.
