[treehugger] Intel Invests in Solar Power, Forms New Company

Computer chip maker Intel Corp. announced today that it would make a $50 million investment in solar energy through its Intel Capital division, forming a new company. The new venture, SpectraWatt Inc. will manufacture solar cells for distribution to solar panel manufacturers. Other investors in the company include Cogentrix Energy (a Goldman Sachs subsidiary), PCG Clean Energy and Technology Fund, and the German firm Solon.

Expanding their horizons again. Good luck to them. Hopefully, they'll make alot of money but I wonder what kind of startup costs they are facing by entering the solar business this late in the game.

No 50 million is their initial investment to attract other investors because I'd feel more secure about investing my money if a large corporation was throwing in 50 million of their money. The actual start up costs will be lower than that but if you factor in the cost of them having to play catch up or buy some of the existing technology from the existing manufacturers out there.

That's why I said I wonder what is the start up cost.
