new system build help plz?

Thread Starter
First I want to say that I have tried really hard not to post yet another "help with new build...". I read and read lots over really great info on several different forums. It's been a while since I've built a system, and the gerbils running my current system are old and need to be retired. So...

I'm in the market to build a new system. I do some light business use - quickbooks pro 2007, office xp 2003, etc. and gaming - WOW, AoC, etc. I would like to OC, and this would be the first time. I am concerned about keeping my system quiet but cool. Peak ambient temp in summer runs avg 77F.

Depending on current market conditions at the time of purchase I've narrowed things down to the following.

Combo at newegg thru 6/30. $280.
CPU: e8400 - would like to oc to 4+ gz on air. $190
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037
Case: Antec p182. $140
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...6811129025&Tpk

CPU heatsink: Thermalright Ultra-120 extreme. $56
http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/therm...r-p-16580.html

arctic cooling mx-2. $7
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186020

CPU cooler: Nexus 120. $16
http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/nexus...-case-fan.html

MB: Asus P5q deluxe. $210
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131297
I'm thinking p45, to have option to upgrade cpu to quad if/when need be. Not sure if this is wise. This would also impact memory choices. Do I go with faster ddr2 or just go with ddr3 from the start? Is it unrealistic to think I'm just going to pop in a new cpu a year or 2 from now, or is it better to save that money and just build a new system then?

Ram: mushkin 4gb 2x2. $115
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146785

HD: 500gb 7200.11 seagate. $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288

PSU: PC Power & Cooling PPCS750QBL Silencer 750W. $135
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703019

or Antec TPQ-850 850W. $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371009

Graphics: ati 4850. $200.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130337

dvd writer: Samsung sh-s203n. $31.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151154

OS: xp pro 32 or 64 bit, but will probably go vista.

Total: ~$1170 - without shipping.

Budget is flexible. I was thinking somewhere around $1500, but basically I'm trying to get the most bang for the buck.

If anything here doesn't make sense, please let me know. I haven't done this in a while and would appreciate any help.

Looks like a good build, but I have a few suggestions.

Don't go for that 28", the image quality will be very poor because it has the same amount of pixels as a 24", but much more area, which means less DPI and translates into less sharp image quality.

Don't buy AS5, go for MX-2, it's the same price but is better. It conducts heat better and doesn't need to cure like AS5.

That's a very interesting pay of RAM sticks your picked out, I was just about to put my REDLINEs up in the For Sale section. DDR2-1000 5-5-5-15 2.05v.(Never been overclocked, I didn't even get a chance to use them ) I was going to ask 75 shipped. Would you be interested or should I go put up the new thread?

Just curious as to why the q6600? I was originally looking at the q9300, but due to it's multiplier, I saw limits to it's overclocking, and most current apps wouldn't take advantage of 4 cores. I was thinking of a possible cpu upgrade down the road. Although by then I'd probably just build another new system. Also, why the g.skill over the mushkin? Price is similar. Is there quality or other issues?

I have a friend that may have a 22" crt, relatively free. I also changed to the mx-2. That looks a lot easier to use. Thanks for the ram offer RGR, but I think I'm going to wait a bit and order all new.

Thanks for all the feedback.

just a small suggestion, maybe you want to consider the Scythe sliptream for your cpu cooling fan. it generally perform at a similar noise level as the artic cooling fan you chose but pushes more air.

I noticed that you are aftering a system that is on the quiet side, but if you dont mind a little noise to maximize your cpu cooling, you can also consider the scythe ultra kaze which is great for cooling heatsinks.(of course it's also cheaper than the Actic cooling fan of your choice)

ps: i am not sure if this has been changed but i read that the ASUS p5q and generally most P45 boards are having difficulties achieving over 450mhz FSB. so i think it would be better to get a more stable P35 board for now, like the DFI LP LT P35 T2R

I had considered the scythe, but it was not pwm. I wasn't sure if that really matters, but thought it would keep the system quieter at times. The arctic I chose was the wrong model too. There's another for $8 and it's only 25mm thick.

I will look into the mobo. I really liked the p45 chipset, but will have to reconsider.

Show me where you found this false information? Every P45 on the market can clock to 500+FSB, and they do it more easily than the P35s.

That's funny! I was just double checking the oc ability of the mobo I chose, and was just about to post a similar question. Maybe the issue is with pushing a quad over 4ghz?

Any thoughts on going with a gtx 260 vs 8800gts/9800gtx when they arrive next week? My other thought is to go with 9800gtx and then do the step up later. Also, I'm concerned about the psu. Maybe need to go to 620hx?
