For like one or two years the data you have in a RAID 0 with two identical hard drives (purchased at same time) would still be safe. Its only after a couple years that one may fail (assuming you got decent hard drives), and by that stage it would've meant that you need to get a few new hard drives.
I might dig out my old Computer Architecture lecture notes and recap lol!

oh yeah, just a quick 1. So say you have 2x500 RAID0 and 2x500 RAID1 (RAID10), how would these 'appear' under My Computer in Windows?? Say that no extra partitions were created, would you just 'see' 2 local disc drives under windows - 1disc for RAID0 and 1disc for RAID1, even though there are 4 discs in total?

get 2 (or more) single platter drives, samsungs or barracudas and run them striped. i think the biggest they do are 320 gb tho.

single platters are faster in raid.

edit

Spinpoint HDD322HJ OR Seagate Barracuda ST3320613AS are the fastest 7k single platter drives iirc.

um... you should see 1.5TB as 1gb for RAID0 and 500GB for RAID1

Honestly though, I reckon a Raptor (Velociraptor) for the boot drive (Drive C) and 1TB (at least) worths of data storage, so if RAID 0 2x500gb or RAID 1 2x1TB. Thats my preference though.

Thats IF I have the money... I don't. I've got some money reserved for a new graphics card after they drop the prices a lot more.

Hope I help.

ah i see, yeah i get it now.

Velociraptors are ££$$ though

So you could run the boot drive from the Velociraptor, then have a RAID for games, storage? Is that what you mean?

Will keeping the operating system on its own drive, and putting games / storage on a RAID boost performance?

EDIT: Ah i see the above pic!!

I think its going to best (taking into consideration prices and performance) to do the 4x500GB Seagate's 7200.11 - RAID1 + RAID0

Two seperate arrays or RAID10?

Also, ensure your motherboard chipset supports RAID. I know Intel ones that have "R" at the end support it. So, ICH6-ICH9 wont support RAID, but ICH6R to ICH9R will. I have ICH8R on my board. Read the manual to find out.

sorry RAID 10!

That mboard supports RAID 0, 5, 10 so all is good.

EDIT: One last thing (for now!). I currently have this set up on my PC:

C: windows XP
H: windows Vista

The above are 2 partitions on my Raptor drive

Then I have G: 500GB seagate storage

And F: 72GB hitachi for gaming

What would be an ideal file structure for the RAID10. i.e. where would you put the files?

Do you leave the RAID1 alone purely for mirroring of the other RAID? We established that RAID10 would show up 2 drives within windows, correct?? Or was that for RAID1 + RAID0???

RAID1 + RAID0 would show up as two drives like my screenshot shows above.

RAID10 would show up as one drive because in effect your only seeing the RAID0 array because the RAID1 array is hidden away in the background backing everything up.
