Operating System, Storage and Gaming - which HDD's & which RAID? - Page 4

Yeah i thought so.

So I wouldn't see the 'mirroring' of files phyically on the screen, it would just happen?

Will anything I add to my HDD be running in RAID0, and it will automatically be backed up (mirrored) using RAID1? So I can just plant everything on the 1 disk - games/os/storage?

Or can you partition a RAID setup?

found a great little source here:

http://www.acnc.com/04_01_00.html

Not very technical but explains well.

And for RAID10 vs RAID5 read here:

http://www.miracleas.com/BAARF/RAID5_versus_RAID10.txt

RAID10 is concluded as the best outcome. Depends on your needs I guess.

You don't see any mirroring. It all happens in the background without your knowledge. So, when you write a file to your computer it writes to the other hard disks at the same time.

You can check whether arrays are working though.

1. When you boot you'll see a RAID status screen (i'll get SS in a minute)

2. Installing Intel Matrix Storage Manager allows you to see your RAID arrays and how they are working. It is the second screenshot shown in my previous post.

3. When you load into Windows, a popup box appears telling you that RAID1 is working and your files are protected (again, SS's in a sec)

This one was blurred. My camera got confused. But, it's what you see at boot:

This is what I see when i load into Windoze.

sweet

So it'll just be a 1TB drive shown as C: (RAID10). I can handle that.

I will probably(??no-definitely) be back when the time comes to set it up!!

So when it comes to recovery, say if one of the RAID0 disks fail, do you do that from within windows or Recovery Console?

If one RAID0 disk fails, you can boot from the RAID1 disks. In RAID10, you wouldn't need to change anything, you'd just notice on that bootup screen one disk would be red and would say "error" or something.

You then replace the broken disk, and in Windows (i use Intel Matrix Storage Manager) it will rebuild the RAID0 array automatically. The popup box would say repairing array.

If you had a seperate RAID0 and RAID1, and a RAID0 disk went, youd' have to buy a new disk and reinstall windows and all your apps, but hopefully, any important data would be on the RAID1 array

hi again,

I finally decided on the following motherboard and HDD's:

- Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6 Intel P45 DDR2 Motherboard
- 4 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II

- Is it likely that I will get SATA II leads with my new HDD's? Or will I have to buy extra? Or can I just use normal SATA leads with these drives?
- What is the difference bewteen ICH10R south bridge or Silicon Image Sil5723 SATA II ports???

I also read this spec about my MB:

Storage Interface South Bridge:
- 6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATAII0, SATAII1, SATAII2, SATAII3, SATAII4, SATAII5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
- Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10

GIGABYTE SATA2 chip:
- 1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices
- 2 x SiI5723 chips (Smard Backup): -4 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (GS0-Source, GS1, GS2-Source, GS3) supporting up to 4 SATA 3Gb/s devices, - Support for SATA RAID 0 and RAID 1

So I have bought 4 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II HDD's and I want to run them in RAID10. Is this possible, as the above says that the RAID10 is only supported on the south bridge interface? Is that SATA II compatible anyway?
