Intel's Atom processors, at least those aimed at netbooks and nettops are selling like hot cakes currently and as the low-cost market grows, things can only go up for them. With so many manufacturers having Atom-based machines either released or in the works Intel can expect to make a solid buck off the low-cost market and that's certainly not something that AMD would like to hear. To counter the Atoms AMD is apparently working on a new, low-power CPU of its own.

Yet unnamed, the processors are 64-bit single-core parts working at a top speed of 1GHz. Featuring a K8 generation core, the CPU also boasts a DDR2 memory controller, a 800 MHz HyperTransport link and 256 kB of L2 cache. Coming in a 812 pins BGA package, the 1 GHz CPU, together with the northbridge should have an 8W TDP. No word on manufacturing process but it will likely be 65nm as AMD is still a couple of months away from making 45nm chips and they will mostly be Opterons (at least at first).
