Computer randomly freezes! - Page 3

This is driving me insane!!! I just got mass effect and try to play it but it keeps freezing, (sometimes for around 40 mins before it freezes).

i have used PC Check 6 to check CPU, Mobo, HDD, and GPU (not sure how well this program works but its meant to me good) - and they all came up 100%

i haven't been able to run mem test yet, im going to run that over night tonight.

do you think my north bridge overheating could cause my system to freeze?

Joshn, what are the chipset temperatures while gaming? What is your room ambient temperature? Sorry if this was already mentioned but what kind of airflow do you have in your case? Are you hard drive(s) getting enough airflow to them?

Good luck

well all the temps that i am able to monitor seem to be pretty low- im not sure which one my chip set is, but none are over 50 except my cpu and nb. its never overheated before and i haven't changed anything, EXCEPT my north bridge that always stays at 71-72*C, it has been like that since i got the board. do you think the prolonged heat could have killed it?

i ran mem test last night, woke up 8 hours later and its only 72% sigh...so we will no if its the memory in the next few hours i suppose

Edit
sorry forget airflow. its fine, i have even tried with the side of the case off with a big fan.
i have also just recently cleaned out the dust from my cpu hsf which made temps and airflow much better. my hard drives are also always nice and cool, i have an intake fan on the front blowing straight over them.

ive never herd of an 8hr memtest before. are you sure it was still on the first pass? double check that, it should only take 30min to an hour max.

i would check the HDD. Download HD Tune and do a system check, err whatever its called, to see if there are any bad sectors.

check the drivers and bios updates as well. make sure theyre all updated. also are you running sp1? if not i would download it.

but to me it sounds like a HDD problem. i would deff give HD Tune a shot. If its not the HDD try runnign a prime 95 or stability test in everest ultimate, to see if it locks up under load. everest is nice cuz it will monitor temps as well.

Simply click the "Download" button. You need version 11 of the Data Lifeguard tools. Burn that .iso to a CD and boot to it. Run the surface scan and let us know if it finds any bad sectors. If it doesn't then you ruled out a bad hard drive. Now a surface scan can't detect if the internal parts are "failing" so perhaps an aging drive could also be the culprit.

Make sure your running the memtest scan outside of Windows. In other words download the app and burn it to a CD. After you've booted to the utility, hit (C) and select tests 5 and 8. Run those each for at least an hour.

I would also verify the voltages on your PSU with a multimeter. If your unsure on how to do this here is a guide that I would recommend checking out: http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/guide...ing-guide.html.
Are you plugged into a UPS/Surge protector? Have you phyiscally reviewed your motherboard and looked for possibly leaking/bulging capacitors?

These are very simple troubleshooting procedures that anyone can do. I'm sure you can handle it.

Let us know

Good luck
i cant get the life tools to boot, it just comes up with something about drivers....doesn't actually load?

Joshn, I apologize...I linked you to the wrong utility. You need to download the "Diagnostic" utility which is found here: http://support.wdc.com/product/downl...sid=30&lang=en. Download the .iso and burn it as an image to a CD.
Those chipset temperatures seem kind of high. How many different applications did you use to verify the temperature? What does the BIOS report?

Good luck

ok ill download that now. i just use speedfan to monitor temps, what i suggested before was a safe estimation, the actual values are around 30
im not sure if speedfan monitors the chip set, but all the values bar the hd/cpu/nb are all 30 or under.
