nooby RAID question

Thread Starter
i am a comletely NOOB on raids, n i hav few questions bout raid.

1. can i/we configure raid with a single hard drive?
2. i have a friend who wants to reinstall new OS to her system, but when we started booting the OS cd (from POST then i press F12 for boot selection) the OS cd cannot detect a hard drive.. and also in the bois, there is no PRIMARY MASTER... just secondary master (DVD ram). and the raid configuration was enabled in the bios but her system has only 1 hard drive. thats why i asked if it is possible to configure raid with single hard drive. unluckily the person who build that PC has moved to other country and we dont hav contacts (very helpless). so please OCN gurus help me fix my friend's rig.

every helpful idea will be rewarded as always

raid only works with multiple hdd`s...not for a single hdd.

ah okey... so whats going on with this rig? why cant they detect the hard drive? any possibilities?
lol im not a raid guru, but i can tell you,

depending on the raid you want to use determines the number of HDD you need.

Raid 0 and raid 1 need atleast 2 HDD.
Raid 5 will need atleast 3 HDD.
there are more raids but no need to go in to that.

well there can be several reasons why no disk shows.
1) since you're probably not using raid, go in to the bios, and depending on what bios/board it is set the SATA mode to IDE. it's most likely set on raid. I don't know what bios it is, but just take it off raid. it cannot detect the HDD because it is set on raid mode.

2) HDD could be dead (unlikely in your case)

!!! your first suggestion would be possible... i will try that one. but the second one will be far from the truth, her rig is still running, she just wanted an XP Pro sp2 from her XP home.
thanks!
