According to the slide, a Hypertransport-powered chipset would include the CPU as well as the Northbridge memory controller. The Southbridge and GPU will be bolted on.



If the ultra-portable, cheap-but-cheerful, widdly PC is to kick off, AMD wants its slice of the pie, just like Intel, VIA, the other outfit and current ruler of this particular roost, ARM. µ
AMD has more efficient chipsets than Intel so let's see if they can compete here.

It looks more like a VIA Nano competitor. It's too big, hot and power-hungry. The Atom is a different approach, 45nm and no out-of-order engine logic.

But then again there are the chipsets, and looking at the Atom now the CPU has the equivalent of a passive southbridge heatsink while the northbridge has a larger, actively cooled heatsink.. So maybe the complete platform will actually be both more efficient and more powerful. That would be nice for AMD

Eh... At 8w, it is between the Atom and Nano. I believe the Atom is designed for up to 5w while Nano is up to 25w.

AMD's GPU, intergrated memory controller, and low power chipsets maybe able to give it enough of an advantage here. (i.e. The 780G+SB700 idle at like 3w and use like 20w under load)

It only supports DDR2-400?!?! That's going to hurt them a bit. I'm going to assume that the architecture will be based more on K8 than K10. I wonder if it will be fabbed on 65nm or 45nm... If it's 65nm at 8W, that's going to be a good sign for when it gets migrated to 45nm and beyond.

I doubt DDR2-400 would hurt them THAT much since it isn't really for intensive apps.

I would really like one of these new CPUs from AMD, Intel, or VIA on a mITX mobo with 4-6 SATA ports. Great for a low poer home server.

I believe the Atom is 2 to 8W. If this AMD uses 8W at 1GHz, the Atom is looks to be a little more efficient. Is this AMD processor dual core?

Without knowing performance, there is no way we can declare which one is more efficent.


The AMD processor is single-core from the specs and diagram.

Not really.... Don't forget that AMD has the intergrated memory controller while Atom does not. AMD also has lower power chipsets than Intel. AMD maybe able to make up the power difference there.

While the Atom (2w) is efficent, the accompanying chipset is not. The i945GC has a TDP of 22w while the much weaker i945GSE has a TDP of 5.5w. Compare the i945GC against the vastly more powerful AMD 780G+SB700 (~20w). The 780G is about 5-6 times more powerful in 3D so AMD has a lot of leeway there to reduce power to match the i945. Unfortunately, I don't have any numbers on any mobile version of the 780G yet though.
