How fast can I OC an X48 vs 780i w an E8500 no SLI in the Pic?

Thread Starter
I am getting ready to build a new OCed PC machine and I am debating between an X48 with DDR2 vs a 780i with DDR2. Does anybody have any hard numbers on the E8500 with these chipsets or other opinions on this question?

I can already hit 4.2Ghx on a 680i with the E8500 and wondering if I even need a new Mobo but I want more speed from the chipset.

PS I do run 8800 GTX SLI Graphics but I am not married to them...

Any ideas or comments ??

Its a 780i in the title not 7800 duh

You can edit the title, just so you know.

I don't think you have anything to gain by going to a new motherboard, that is any awesome overclock you have that 680i. Get yourself a independent sound card, and free up some cpu bandwidth, that would probably be money better spent if you are a gamer.

I agree that investing in a new mobo won't help you too much. You might just find out that you've hit the limit of your CPU

A soundcard is an option, but just for better sound (on an E8500, the 'stress' that onboard sound puts on a CPU is negligible...)

From what I have seen of my new mobo.. the latency is tighter on the 680i, unless you are cranking the MCHv and the PL.. or running >500mhz FSB.

I would say stick w/ the 680i.. there is no need for you to change. You might consider getting some lower latency ddr 800 to help out with some extra bandwidth..

*You can play with raising the PCI-E freq up a bit [105-115mhz] to have some extra bandwidth for your GPU as well.

I don't know s"#$% about overclocking but I want to start getting it. I have a Striker Extreme 680i SLI and a Q6600. So far the only thing I did was changing from 1066 to 1346, but I don't know the point of the multiplier, the correct voltages and stuff like that. Does anyone here please help me understand and get a good cpu overclocking? My mem's are Kingston Hyper DDR26400 low latency... they work factory setting at 4-4-4-12-2T 2.0v. I've tried changing the settings to 4-4-4-8-2-T 2,025V and it didn't quite work. I get stumped when I see guys of the forum talking about the references of the CPU and memories and when I to anythink out of the ordinary the PC won't boot. What am I doing wrong? Thank you very much

PeterH, Please fill in your system spec in the USER CP and make your own thread and people will come help, Please be respectful and do not high-jack someone elses thread.

Post anything including voltages of CPU,RAM,NB etc, would help us help you.

Stick with the 680i, unless you get the 780i FTW, then it might help OC some more.
