Thermaltake V1 vs Zalman 9700

Thread Starter
Does anyone know how these two CPU coolers compare. I'm currently using the V1 and with an ambient of 27 C I load at 64 C using OCCT (yes I know it's over; I tested for stability in the winter time). I'm wondering if the Zalman CNPS 9700 would help or not. I have an unopened box of a 9700 and I only want to open it if it shows an improvement over my V1.. I don't want to test it to see if it's better since if my V1 is better I'm going to sell it.

And no I don't want suggestions on CPU coolers. I'm aware there are better ones but these are my choices.

From most reviews the V1 pulls ahead minimally over the 9700. Both are comparable in weight and size. Really I would say its an asthetics choice at this point.

Sounds about right but I couldn't find a review that compared both of the coolers together.

I just went by temps and test setups. Me, if it will fit I would go with the 9700. I trust both companies but as far as cooling Zalman has always done right by me.

I can tell you from personal experience that the 9700 is a great cooler plus is looks sexy. I haven't had any experience with the TT V1 but I've heard it's a hella good cooler. Good luck on your decision.

The Zalman 9700 only really performs well if you run it at top speed, other than that it's a pretty mediocre, silent cooler. I've recently upgraded from it to a Xigmatek HDT-s1283, if you can get that to fit in your case it won't be noticably louder but perform a heck of a lot better, in my experience, anyway.

As for the Thermaltake V1, I have no idea, I haven't had any experience with that one, sorry.

Go with the zalman 9700 hands down.
well the zalman costs top dollar, i know that. plus you get a mirror base, and the hsf itself just looks cool. not tryin to knock your ****, but the TT v1 looks obnoxious imo. during the mild california winter, i can get to 3.2ghz on the 9700 without hitting 60c.

considering the 9700 is NIB, you could probably sell it and make a decent amount of dough.

Not to go too far off topic, but under 60 degrees? What's your ambient temperature? What voltage are you using for that? I was using 1.30V for 3.2GHz with an ambient temperature of 17 degrees C with my Q6600 and even with the Zalman maxed out it wouldn't go below 62-63 degrees C under Prime95 small FFT... When ambient suddenly became 28 degrees C, that's when I had to change the cooler, especially as I was trying to keep it folding at 3.6GHz with 1.40V... :S

EDIT: Although I notice you're using the 9700 LED, which performs ever so slightly better than than the 9700-NT (the nickel plated nVidia special edition one, which was what I was using at the time...)
