GA-MA78GM-S2H Audio question

Thread Starter
My apologies for the total noob question, but this is the first time I have set this up. I have a 40" Samsung LCD screen, with 2 HDMI/DVI inputs, a VGA input and the usual component audio inputs.

I just build my new htpc (SWEET!) with a GA-MA78GM-S2H mobo.

I had (with the old media pc) been running the vga to the TV, so its just a big monitor. The audio I ran through my receiver using the digital audio out jack (looked like an RCA type?).

Since I dont have that output anymore with the new htpc, what is the best way to run audio out to the receiver to get the full HD quality (surround and all that).

And is VGA okay to use as output to the TV? Or should I use HDMI?

Thanks!

The HDMI port will give you a full resolution digital image. Audio will also travel through the HDMI cable to the TV. That's the beauty of it.

I agree that is beautiful, but I dont want the audio through the TV, I want to run it through the surround system.

Should I run the audio from the mobo to the tv to the surround system?

You're definitely going to want to go with HDMI for your TV, or DVI. The audio can be handled by HDMI, but considering you want to connect it to a receiver, you might be able to get an optical to coaxial, or connect all the ministereo jacks (green, black, orange).

Definitely. What interface does your TV's audio out support?

Run analogue audio out to your receiver while video goes to the TV.

The motherboard has optical/digital ports but they only support stereo and not 5.1

Well I'd run it into the TV then use a digital out from the TV to the receiver because I don't think your mobo has digital out.

It looks like the TV has the following audio out:
RCA type L and R
Digital optical out.

The surround system is a Yamaha HTR-5540, kinda old but it looks like it supports optical audio in.

Does that mean I need an HDMI cable to run from the PC to the TV, and then a optical audio cable (link? No clue what this is!) from the TV to the HTR-5540?

No... just run the HDMI cable to the TV and analogue audio cables to the receiver. In the OS, just set the audio output to be on the analogue and disable the HDMI audio.

Okay, HDMI to the TV, analog to the receiver. I guess the other option is a cheap low profile sound card.

A question about HDMI out to the tv. The LCD has a resolution of 1360x768. The VGA output supports this resolution. What do I gain by going with HDMI?

I mean if I play a HD video on the PC, with a resoultion of 1360x768 (hypothetically 1080i), is this not the highest resolution I can get using VGA or anything else?
