My Comp Broke Again! - Page 3

In my experience, strange intermittent problems like this usually happen when hardware is on the fritz. It has happened to me on a PSU and a HDD. When it was the PSU the computer would shut down at random ( leave for class and come back and the computer was off...and the paper that i was working on was gone...), and when it was the hard drive I started getting times when it wouldn't boot right (it would go to the " start windows normally" page) but then it would be fine for a while, then get worse. it ended with the OS being corrupted, and i had to get a new HDD. personally i think the reason the HDD failed was to many "hard power downs" (it got stuck in a loop one time there it powered up and down like 6 times in 5 seconds... a short).
Since you say its a new HDD, i'd say check the PSU (even if the PSU is working, that doesn't always mean that its working well. It could be bouncing the voltage all over the place, and could have damaged the HDD), although the Cmos battery sounds fairly likely too.

Mrzev, if you have a multimeter handy you can check the rails that way. You'll get accurate results this way. Here is a guide that explains this process: http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/guide...ing-guide.html

Good luck

i think im just gona buy another PSU. Im sure this GForce8800 sucks up a ton of energy. I dont have anything special for PSU... probably 400Watt.

In 2-3 months or i might wait longer depending on nextgen stuff. but im gona spend around $1200USD buildin a new rig. What kind of PSU would be good. I was thinking 750 watt range would work out nicely. Its gona be worth as much now as it will then. I might do SLI with some graphics cards.

Im a complete noob on PSU heh. Some Newegg links for stuff would help out a lot. The more and more i hear the issue makes me believe it more. I have 4 hard drives that are broken... and 2 dead MOBO... probably something else causing this. The HDD i ha e now is recognizing on boot. do you think i broke it?

I like how you dont really know what wattage PSU you have... because thats exactly how i was when my first one went out ( as it turns out a 144watt PSU isn't up to powering two DVD burners, 2HDD, 2 sticks of ram, a GPU and a 70watt CPU...weird).
This link is actually pretty imformative, that'll help you get to know PSU stuff a little better, that way when people start suggesting ones you will know kinda what you're looking for.

EDIT:
As for if you hurt the HDD or not... its hard to tell. Its hard enough to track down one thing thats wrong, let alone 2 or three in sequence. You'll have to try it out on a buddys computer or something like that, unless you get everything else worked out really quick.

Do the problems usually occur when the computer is warm? meaning had it been sitting for a while before it booted up just fine?
