HELP! Should I buy a 3870x2?

Thread Starter
So I'm finally ready to upgrade my gpu. Thought I had it all figured out. I was going to go with a 3870x2. I started looking around and realized there was more option for this card then I thought. I found some OC'd versions, some less expensive versions ($319 for a Sapphire), the sweet looking Asus with dual fans and even a GDDR4 version. I figured I'd do some more research. All that did was confuse me more! Now I realize the 4850 is days away and maybe even for sale at the right place. The 4870 isn't far behind and of course the 4870x2 will follow that. So my question is...What the eff should I do?

I'm a console to PC convert gamer so currently I only play Call of Duty 4. I was planning on getting Age of Conan along with the 3870x2. As far as what I'm willing to spend I must admit that Sapphire was looking pretty good at $319 but I was kind of leaning towards an OC'd MSI and very interested in the Powercolor GDDR4 model (only PCIe 1.1, kinda threw me off). These cards were priced at about $369 and $395 respectfully. I believe I read somewhere that the 4870x2 was rumored to be around $450 and if that were the case and it was out now I wouldn't be bothering you kind folks. I guess that means I'm willing to pay up to $450 + tax/shipping. Currently COD4 is functional and some pro gamers even prefer the low resolutions and minimal graphics affects but I'm looking for pretty! Considering I'm upgrading from an XFX 8600GT 256MB what would you guys and gals suggest I do?

Sorry for the short story, I just wanted to give you as much to work with as possible. Thanks in advance!

You'd honestly be fine with a 3870. You'd save a BUNCH of money too. For your resolution (I'm assuming you're running ta 1280 x 1024), a 3870 x 2 is NOT needed.

Unless puppies or kittens are gonna die, wait for the 4xxx cards.

Thanks for your opinions guys. I'm seriously considering taking BOTH of your advice. I'm thinking about grabbing this guy:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161218

And considering an upgrade to the 4870x2 when its available. I just wish I knew the release date. If it's sooner then later, I would wait but if it's later...my urge to spend would stop me from waiting. I guess I'll sleep on it.

I would still like to hear some other opinions too. Agree or disagree. This decision has proven to be much more complicated then I thought.

Betrivent, off subject here but what kind of temps do you see with your Q6600 @ 3.6? Is it G0? I wasn't comfortable with the temps I was seeing when I was at 3.6 (although it seemed stable, never prime95'd) and ended up dropping it back to stock. I still feel like they're high at 50 (idle)

Ok I decided some of these questions are right up my alley for once considering normally I can't do much to help people . If you are playing CoD4 and you want pretty then you will probably need a 3870 x2 for a decent fps on Full high graphics (depending on the map and the fps that you find good enough). As you can see in my sig I have 2 3870's and they run the game fine on full high (however I have got yitch3.cfg which downgrades the gfx a lot) although a 3870x2 will do the job it would be better to wait for the new cards to come out as you will regret it later on if you don't (I did when i got my 3870 knowing that the x2 was coming out). I think you should just wait for the new ones and don't buy any gfx card/s .

As for your temps they are rather high however I don't know what airflow situation that cooler is in? My Q6600 is running fine at 3GHz on the stock cooler in Australia!! (and has been ever since March). What's your ambient temperature as my room is normally around 25/28 Celsius and my CPU idles around 42 and load in prime95 around 66 (bit high i know). Some pics of your cases inside would help perhaps?

Wait for 4850/4870/4870X2. No point in upgrading at the moment. 4850 is suposedly better than 3870.

Thanks for all your opinions. I think I'm definitely just going to wait until the release of the 4870 to make my decision. Seems like they'll be released on the 23rd from what I'm hearing. At this point the cost is going to be the main factor. If the price is too high for me I'll default back to the 3870x2 which should be reduced even more due to the release of the new chips. On the other hand if the cost is low enough, waiting for the 4870x2 will most likely be my plan.
