CoD4 is freezing all of a sudden, scary freezes

Well I have been fine playing CoD4 ever since xmas when I got my new card (8800GT 512mb). I have logged quite a few hours into it and it has been a really great game for me.

Until Recently . . .

The last few weeks, out of nowhere, the game has all of a sudden decided it's time to freeze up on me and really distort my screen in ways that I'm really unhappy with. On top of this I get awkward lag every so often even though my ping is usually around 50 and running fraps shows i'm up in the 80s for FPS. I tried to capture some screenshots when it happened the last time, but for some reason "print screen" didn't capture any in my screenshots log and my xfire "scroll lock + s" didn't get it either . . .

Anyway these are really messed up, usually my screen will flicker fast and follow with a full game freeze and my screen gets distorted . . . like the map becomes really awkward with everything changing their tint or the entire screen becoming almost camo patterned or something . . . it's a little ridiculous.

If someone could explain to me what is going on and how I might be able to fix this that would be incredibly helpful, because I'm dumbfounded. I've ran fine for the past 6 months or so with this video card and everything, now out of nowhere I'm getting real big issues.

Now this is the only real issue I've been having. I've been playing Bioshock and WoW lately as well and no issues from either of those. It's not an overheating issue, I have rivatuner running on my other monitor while in game and I'm at around 40-50C, which is great (thank God I got that Accelero S1).

Sounds like corrupt memory on you graphics card. Riva tuner only monitors gpu core temp. Just because thats stable doesn't mean the memory is.

Try a different card if you have one available.

when was the last time you updated your video drivers to latest, I have 8800GT and the 175.16 work really well for me in COD4, also when was the last time you reformatted? I had an issue on my sons rig with COD4 and my G80 8800GTS and a reformat fixed it up.

actually last night I updated the driver to the 175.16 after I got the freeze, and when I played after I didn't freeze, but I was still getting the odd lag. I don't know if maybe the driver update really fixed it, but I get this feeling it will freeze again cause I had that odd lag before the last freeze . . . but who knows new drivers can work wonders . . . here's to keeping fingers crossed

also by reformat, do you mean the HDD? cause the last time I reformatted was quite a long time ago . . .

I also feel like maybe reinstalling the game might help? Not sure though . . .

yes reformatting your HDD and reinstalling windows, it fixed my sons COD4 problems 100%, he was getting weird lag whenever he went to iron sights or fired his weapon.

hmm that is a good thought . . . I just will have to backup my data . . . I guess I could use a reformat . . . I was going to play and see if just reinstalling works first before "reinstalling" my HDD lol

I actually read somewhere last night that updating punkbuster helps with lag and stops the freezing? That's odd . . . but I'll give it a shot.
