Lagging in boot up

Thread Starter
I have a Asrock AM2XLI-eSATA2 motherboard which i had a single core 3100 i think it was and 1gb of DDR2 533 ram and NVIDIA GeForce 7950GT with no problems but now i have up graded a little and have now got on that board a Dual Core 4600+ with 4gb of DDR2 800 with the same graphics card.

I have gone through the bios and all the settings that i can think of are on what they are ment to be on so am very stuck on what it could be so could anyone help me with this please?

Also which i found to be very strange and this only started yesterday, i went inside my pc to check a couple of things so i unplugged the power lead as you do and when i plugged the lead back in and went into the bios the cosmos had been wiped back to what it was when i first got the board as if the cosmos battery had been taken out which it wasnt and now it does it everytime i take the power lead out. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

Thank you for any help you can give me with this.

First off welcome to Overclock.net (OCN for short). Second please click here and and add you system specs. This way when we need to look at them we don't have to keep referring to your fist post.

Ok now when you talk about unplugging the power lead do you mean the main power connector for the motherboard or the power cord that goes to the wall from the power supply?

EDIT: I just noticed you've been a member longer than I have. Welcome back.

Lmao now i feel like noob lol. Forgot to put what happens in boot up dear oh dear. Right what happens is this it gets to the cpu and ram bit ok but when it gets to the harddrive bit it sits there for ages and then finds them and then proceeds as normal and it didnt do that until i put the new cpu and ram in and my motherboard supports both.

Now goes and shots self in head lol

You could try quite a few things for your boot lockup:

1. If you have the old CPU and ram, you could replace the current with the old ones in turns; couple the x2 with the 1GB of ram to see if it's RAM's fault or the other way around 3100+4GB to check the CPU.

2. Check the power/sata cable for the HDD. Replace them if you have others available. It is possible that while changing the stuff inside the case you have accidentally damaged something.

3. Once you boot up, check the SMART status of the HDD with a tool like "speedfan", but be careful to have the smart activated from the bios.

Now for the power cut/CMOS reset thing, I think it may be a battery-related issue. If it acts when you cut the power like it's going thru a CMOS reset, it may as well be a CMOS reset. While plugged in, the PSU supplies the necesary power to keep the CMOS data alive, but when you remove the plug the CMOS relies on the battery. If the battery is dead (which is rare but it happens) the custom data get whiped since nothing is powering the chip. A replace battery can be found in any computer repair store; they are all compatible and you can probably get one for free if you ask nicely

Hope this helps, and welcome back.

are you running 4x1gb sticks of ram or 2x2gb? if 4x1gb, try removing 2 sticks

is your optical drive ide? if so, try unplugging it once, i have had a few that sometimes or on someboards it kills post time, it will sit at the same message yours does forever before continuing

To speed up my system I disable any windows services I don't need. HERE is a site that lists all of the Windows services and what they do (if you click on the name of the service). I recommend setting them to what is shown in the "safe" column for each service.

HERE is a vista tweaking article you should check out as well. I recommend all the tweaks mentioned in it except using readyboost.

As for the cmos resetting itself make sure you are saving any changes you make and not just rebooting. If you're sure you are saving the changes correctly and the cmos still resets itself then you may want to change the motherboard battery. You can get them cheap at electronics or jewelry stores basically, any place that sells button style batteries.

EDIT: sorry I took so long. I got a little sidetracked lol

Lol missed that post. I started writing my last post right after I got the answer about the power cord. But I didn't actually submit it until just a few minutes ago (got a phone call) so I never saw the one about the HDD's.

You could try disabling all the boot devices besides your primary harddrive.
