need THE BEST router and wireless adapter for a price

Thread Starter
hi there,

At the moment i have a d link router with a d link wireless adapter and to be honest it has never been great, did go out predoidcally, but we recentely had a bath room made over and your going to laugh but weve had tiles that are thicker then the old ones, and the bathroom is right in middle of the wireless airway, and i swear to god its actually made the connection terrible (lol)

so bascailly im looking for the best router and wireless adapter combo for no more then £90, £60 being the target. Its not of major importance but if it can be bought in the shops it would be all the more good, cause the ole man is moaning that he cant look at hes bank accounts ( and what ever old man look at on the internet )

WOOT a post i know about!!!

Go with any N based routers... They are the new standard that uses a tri omni antenna and a new algorithm that will allow a much larger range.

That would require you to have a N based card on laptop tho... If so, make sure you adjust the setting to N based and not mixed... if its on Mixed it will adjust to the lowest its attached too.

other options is to buy antennas for the current wireless router. At my GF's house i was able to go pretty far when i had it directed to the spot i set my laptop at.

At last... pay NO ATTENTION to speed. Because A can go 50mbs and B can go 100 doesnt mean you will get that speed... Your stuck with the crappy (probably) max 1.1mb up

lol im not bad im computers but i fail @ networking and so on,

first of, whats a "n based router" and secondly if i was to get a wireless adapter of the same make i take it would be compatabile?

and its not really range im looking for or speed, its just the power to stay connected!, i dont really care if its 56k p/s aslong as it stays connected, and ive recently got into downloading very large files and very high speeds, so if it could stay connected through that that would be diamond!

I would recommend the Linksys Wireless N Gigabit router. It's awesome. If you want to waste $200 though, get the large Gaming Edition one that comes with more Gigabit ports and some kind of special optmizations for gamers or something like that but what's really important is it's got better range.

I have this router - $80USD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124085

Here is a car that will use the N standard. - $60USD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16839127006

For both 160USD or 71.75 UK£

Basicaly using the new N standard, you will be able to get 2x the range. from 35Meters on the B and G..(most common now) to a 70Meter range with N.

This would work best at making sure you keep a stable connection. If you lose connection with this, its probably because your ISP (internet Service Provider) sucks.... This will also last for a while... Be aware... Linksys was the worst customer support i have ever had to call.

Not 200$... its 60$... and the Gaming Edition is a joke...... On a lan... you have 10 computers hooked up to each other... is your 100meg cat5 gona give you latency??? will be <1ms.... Lets say the computers are all on a gigabit connection... so they are at 1000gbs... its still gona be <1ms .

So... you wana play someone across the state... well, your not getting your 54/11meg that g or b offer... your are getting whatever the weakest link to the server is... your wireless is the least of your worries then...

N is nice because of the range... 70Meters INDORS... 300Meters outside..

Actually. You only need an N based standard receiver for taking advantage of the Wireless N standard. It is still backwards compatible with B/G.
... yes its backwards compatible meaning it will use the B or G standards as well.. but it will use the lowest standard that is connected to it.

IE... you have a B and G and N on it...
It will chose the B and you are stuck with using B even though its N based.

Or... you can lock it to N and people on B and G cant connect to it. But if they have a N , they will be able to connect to it and get the full power of N.

I was talking to my Cisco Instructor about that when they started to produce the N routers.

Ohh, and if you already have a G router... then have that up as well. That way it can work for everyone else, while you hog the N all to yourself.
