[Fudzilla] 9800GTX to get a new performance driver

Quote:
Nvidia plans to launch a new Geforce 9800GTX driver and we’ve learned that you should expect a severe performance increase compared to current drives.

We know that this performance jump will affect 9800GTX but as its G92 based card the new driver might speed up some other G92 based products.

Nvidia is doing this simply as with current drivers Radeon 4850 and 4870 are getting too close to 9800GTX performance and Nvidia wants to make some stand.

The performance might be so good that internally Nvidia calls it 9800GTX+. If we see some big improvements that will clearly mean that Nvidia was holding some performance potential back and that it was waiting for the new ATI card.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

I think it's quite underhanded, but good news for GTX owners. Hopefully it extends to bettering the other G92 products, ie the GT and GTS 512. I'm not certain if they are the recently released 177.35 WHQL's, though.

also, is it just me or is nVidia doing a lot more on the driver front recently?

why do 9800gtx owners have to wait this long? nvidia could have released these drivers long time ago. now they do it because ati launch their new gpu. i hate to say it but nvidia only cares about money. i bet the 9800gtx could do so much more, but nvidia doesn't unlock its full potential because then the gx2 and the gtx260/280 become useless...

Yes, the miracle drivers will be released for G92 cards now, because we obviously haven't had since October of '07 to see performance increases through drivers. I hate Fud sometimes. I award Fudzilla a big fat fail. Thanks for the heads-up though if it ends up being true. There's always hope

^ Actually, I would not be. I have modified the new GTX2xx driver to install for my 9600GT and this has resulted in about 10%-15% performance increase over any of the previous drivers. It has also enabled me to OC higher for some unexplained reason.

The difference between your standard INF mod on this driver and the one I have done is that I install the driver with all the settings for the GTX2xx cards, but I just force it to install to 9600GT.

10% - 15% is a hefty performance jump indeed. Kind of stupid to know though that the cards have a lot more potential but are being held back on purpose by the driver.

I did the EXACT same thing as you. 177.26/177.35's with modded .inf file. I am skeptical because Fudfail said that only the 9800GTX will get a boost. Why not the 8800GTS 512? It's pretty much the same card. Overclocked and that's it it seems. Here's a comparison:

Did you just change two lines to point the installer for your card to the GTX2xx installer? If you did then it would be the same what I did. Using the inf from an old installer is not the same thing. If you run intensive 3D apps, you should see a decent boost in performance. Like I said, for my 9600GT cards I got about 10% - 15% boost overall. This also means that either this (177.35) driver can push your 8800GTS to run better, or the new upcoming one can be modded to push it higher even if there is no official support

I will bet you what NV is doing is just taking the 177.35 and packing it so that it supports the 9800GTX and potentially other 88xx and 98xx series cards to boost performance. You can do this yourself. I very much doubt that this "upcoming" release will be any different than what 177.35 offers.
