Leela: Didn't you have ad's in the 20th century?
Fry: Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines. And movies. And at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts and written on the sky. But not in dreams. No siree!

3. Posters in markets. For example, Hellgate: London. I only saw ads in places that had store NPCs.

Places that are not fine:

1. Random spots in the middle of a battle field.
2. Limited usage or else in-game spam, lol.

Cheaper games with in-game ads (I highly doubt they'll make it completely free), or no ads at all if the prices for the consumer does not go down.
+1
Couldn't have said it better myself.

+1 to this

But ads like we get on websites, where it pops up or sits there in the sidebar, or while loading levels, or any other blatant form is too much.

yeah neither. its just marketing. when you drive through your beautiful home city, admiring the thriving life, do you complain when you see an advertisement billboard? didnt think so.

and besides, unless you DIRECTLY look at the signs, during a heated battle you dont even notice the advertising anyway.

pop-up ads, on the other hand, firmly place me in the 18% of people who DO NOT like ads.

In BF2142 it's terrible, nothing breaks the immersion of the game as much as seeing Core 2 Duo ads 150 years in the future.

If you're going to a different time period, adapt your ads. Make them funny, otherwise it's just lame, and I could be watching TV for the same experience.

Their banner was always located across the top of the screen.
They aren't really ads... they're more like "hey! haven't heard of WoW yet? check it out!"

IMO ads are fine as long as they obey a few simple rules.

1. Be appropriate in both context and presentation. I dont want to see an ad for a company that doesn't belong in the setting of the game. If the game is set in new york there shouldn't be ads for a chinese dishwasher soap company. In the same vein, ads should be unobtrusive and fit in naturally. This means there should be no ads in menus or loading screens but billboards, posters pamphlets etc.. ingame, are welcome.

2. The ads should decrease cost of game. $60 is a significant amount of money to pay for a few hours of entertainment. If game companies are receiving large sums of money for ingame advertising then we the consumers, should reap some sort of benefit. Even if its only a $5 or $10 difference in individual game price I would be very pleased as would all other gamers.

I think in game advertising could be cool, as long as it's like a computer sitting on a desk or a magazine that you see lying around.
