Dual / Tri / Quad Cards - WHen r They Needed

Dual / Tri / Quad Cards - WHen r They Needed?

for instance...
i am happy to use my PC and games on a 19" wide screen using 1440x990...

A what point (if any) does my setup require 2x Graphics cards?
(not talking about current MB or CPU - just screen size and res)

How will running 2x GTS's or 2x 3870 X2 be over running a single card on a 19" monitor on fairly low resolutions?

crossfire and SLI shine when the resaltion is 1900 x1200 + so like a 24" and higher. gaming on a 19" crossfire and sli are not worth it because at 1280x1024 any thing is playable with 1 with card.

very true i agree. ive always thought of that. when will i ever need to SLi of Crossfire. ok higher resolutions but then again im going to need to invest in a better monitor then my tv to go them resolutions. i think that 1280x1024 is good enough for me though

Only high res gaming or high level of quality [read:Crysis]
I have 2 HD3870's in crossfire on my 17" CRT [looking for a 22/24" still] and i can run crysis ultra high settings [no AA/AF though] at 1280/1024

Other than that there is no point

IMO Quad is just over the top for just gaming. It really is. I think its more of a bragging right than anything.

However as for Dual cards as said above its for the top end resolutions really

Tri....Well I am thinking its more like having a Dual card setup with some extra juice.

However with TRI CF you can have two cards working CF and the other for Physics processing. However that was back in the day when Physics was not onboard with a GPU.

oh - and forgot to add:

Larger E-Peen

Bragging rights is a big thing yes - saying "i have one powerful card" and saying "i have 2 cards together" - which sounds better......

sooooo...
unless i am planning to run Crysis on my 42" HDTV on full settings...

a single (say 3870 X2 or 8800GTX) will do the job for a
DX10 game like Crysis or WiC on a 19" monitor on 1280/1024 or 1440/900
on respectable settings!...
i do like my games to look prety..lol

Yes that is correct. A powerful Single card would serve you better at those resolutions.

look guys......
Crysis at high settings on 1440x900 i can deal with!...lol
considering i am still using an 7800gs.....AGP just now!...lol

but your help has been appriciated and helped me with what PSU to buy at the end of the day!...

i WAS going to get a 780w PSU or bigger in the posibility of getting another card to run Sli / CF...

but...looks like i will just be going for the smaller and cheaper PSU of 630w instead if CF / SLi is not really a go-r for my setup!

hoefully my mates borrowed 3870 X2 will be staying in my case perminatly!...lol
ps - i can DEF vouche at saying you need more than 500w to power a 3870 X2!!..lol

merci all!
