eee pc any good?

Thread Starter
hey all, i`ve been looking around for a nice laptop and now i`ve seen the eee pc 900
i like it
nice and small, linux pre-installed and nice long battery life.

but now my questions :
  1. can it play cd`s / dvd`s?
  2. can i use it to stream movies to my HD tv easy?
  3. is it fast enough for Vista Ultimate (vLite done)
  4. or can i at least change the linux to Ubuntu 8.04?

cheers

ok, probably would lag with vista ultimate, but only if you try to enable aero. i don't know about the HD video but I do know that it can't play dvd's or cd's but you can probably get an external drive and you most likely can change the linux to ubuntu.

I have the EEE 701 and I am very satisfied with it. The only main difference with yours is the CPU and Screen size, I upgraded my RAM lol.

1. Yes it can play CD/DVD's but you would need an external drive for that as it does not have an Internal drive

2. Yes you could use it for streaming to your TV. However Im not sure how well it would handle HD content due to the CPU.

3. Yes it can Handle Vista Ultimate. I have Vista on mine. I just have Basic as I dont need all the junk Ultimate has lol.

4.Yes you can run any Linux you want on it. However you would need to locate suitable drivers.

I dont know about the other questions but you CAN install ubuntu 8.04!!!! It can even run Compiz Fusion.

I have an eee 701, use it everyday during the semester to take notes on during class, keyboard takes a little adjusting to.
Ubuntu definately works on it, but idk if I would go Vista. I've seen people do it and what not, but I really don't think it's worth the performance hit.
Also,
www.eeeuser.com is an amazing resource for anything and everything eee related, make sure to utilize their wiki and google custom search on the forums. The people there are very knowledgable, and I think there's an entire subforum dedicated to Ubuntu on the eee.

after some looking around i found an external dvd writer/player so that problem is solved

@ Enterprise: it is possible to upgrade the ram? sweetness

about the vista part: i`m using vLite to strip down Vista so the useless things are out...so that`ll help a lot

ow and as final question (for now )
how is it connected to the internet? wifi no? or is it possible to plug it in? cause i don`t have wireless here...only wired

thanx!

Hello again. Yes the ASUS EEE can take up to 2GB RAM @ 667. I have 1GB as to be honest with you its AMPLE for Vista and all applications...I did not get it for gaming LMAO. 2GB is actually a waste to be honest.

To the people who say Vista gives you a performance hit...well to be honest I have not seen it. I have Home basic which is everything I need...plus I stripped all the other stuff I wont need out of it so its a very sleek install.

I find Vista runs VERY smoothly...in my case. I am getting another 8GB SDHC card at some point just as extra storage space for pics and docs ETC.

Yes the ASUS has B/G WIFI and has a LAN port for cabled connections to.

Anytime dude. Its a great little machine and VERY useful when I have no access to a main PC. Awesome piece of kit and worth the money. Once I get some cash to spare I will buy a nice SDHC card. W000T.
