Q6600 or E8400

Thread Starter
this is my second build and im actually resurching everything that is going into this one i am doing an antec 1200 case and i have a 650w psu. im using a msi 8800GT /c of the cooling already on it. now my questions were which mother board and which cpu. i cant decide from either a Asus Rampage formula x48 or a p5q Deluxe which is a p45. both are supposidly ood for overclocking i just would like to know which is more stable oh and im either doing a q6600 oc to 3 ghz or a e8400 oc to like 3.5 is what i would like
post #2 of 15
As you already have an 8800 GT, there is no need for you to get a high end crossfire board. I'd say go with the P45 board.

As for the cpu, I've changed back and forth between using quads and E8400s, and I MUCH prefer the Q6600.

Id say go Q6600 and OC to 3.4 or better

if on a budget and no plan on SLI the GA P35 DS3L

If you dont mind spending some $ get an evga 750i and have the option to get another card for SLI

Or a DFI X38 T2R

Get a TRUE [Thermalright 120 extreme] and the quad and overclock it
For a board - either a GA-P35-DS? [4 or variants of 3 depending on what you need], a P45 board or if you want the Rampage - go the cheap way and get the P5E or Maximus Formula and flash the bios to the rampage one - that's what i've done and all the options work fine

if you building it just for gaming i would get a nf750 and a wolfdale and oc to 4ghz, if its a more day to day system the quad (in a p45) will be better for multitasking.

Why the thermalright 120 extreme its alum. fins and no fan.
It is arguably the best and has been for about 2 years now
Only downside is you have to buy a fan for it...i can reccommend the Scythe Ultra Kaze 2000RPM for it [what i have]

quick questions:

1: Why ppl prefer Q6600 over E8400 ? E8400 produces less heat (correct me if I am wrong, please), could easier be overclocked to 3.6ghz, newer 45nm technology and bigger cache size....when you guys are talking picking a Q6600 for "multi-tasking", how often do you do gaming + movie + chatting + downloading + MP3 all at the same time ?

2: Why Termalright 120 Extreme is also called "T.R.U.E" ??

1: right i think a dual core s more then enough if you`re an average user, just for video-editing or things like that the quad will be usefull

T.r.u.e. is short for ThermalRight Ultimate Extreme 120.

hope this helps
